Hello,

I am very new to firearms, but eager to get a handgun to start practicing with. The trouble is I don't know where to start (I think I want a M&P shield) and tend not to like to over research things on the Internet so I'm looking for a range/store where I can rent to try before I buy. Are there any along this part of the state you would recommend?

Thanks.

Try American Firearms School in Attleboro or Mass Firearms School in Holliston. Both rent hand guns and the range in Attleboro also rents AR's and AK's. The Holliston range only handles pistol caliber. Both have a wide variety of handguns to try, .22, .38, .40, .45. 9mm.

Check the new range in tiverton. I believe he is supposed to rent guns. I believe it is called Sakonnet River outfitters. AFS in Attleboro ma. Is a nice range with a wide selection of guns.

Can I go shoot at a range in RI? That would be pretty awesome because Tiverton isn't far at all.

Can't help with shields but I have a handful of toys you can try out if you want to come up to taunton sometime (sorry going to the foxboro show this weekend so I am not going to have any free time).
Most of the pistols I have are cheap ones

Well, I can't help you with any rentals, but I'll tell you what. If you should decide to become a member of NES and "go green", I'd be happy to setup an appointment with you at my club in East Providence to let you try out a few different guns. You supply the factory ammo and I'll provide some guns for you to try. If you let us know what type of gun you are looking for that will narrow the field. Are you looking for a home defense gun? Small, light, carry gun? A range gun to practice and possibly compete with? etc. etc.

Remember, American Firearms School requires you to bring a buddy to rent anything.. LTC or not.

Is that true now? I have my LTC (MA) and they let me rent a Glock 27 before I bought my used Gen 3 Glock 26. I wanted to get a feel for the size. This was over a year ago so perhaps they have changed their policy but I was by myself. And yes, you have to purchase / shoot their ammo which was not a big deal to me.

"All participants must have a firearms license and have a handgun of their own with them, or havesomeone shooting with them in order to rent a handgun" - from the AFS site

AFS will only let you shoot alone if you can prove you are legally equipped to commit suicide without their assistance. Sensible in a bizarre sort of way.
