Im looking at picking up a Remington 700 in the next few months. My goal with this rifle is to learn and expand my shooting skills - specifically in regards to distance shooting. Id also like to be able to use it for occasional hunting (especially if I can do some trips where real distant shots are possible). 308 is the caliber Im leaning towards - however I could be swayed.

My questions are, are there any calibers that will make my goals more attainable, easier to attain, or the path to achieving them more enjoyable?

Are there significant differences in the 5R models and the SPS models? I understand the concept, would it be noticable?

That said - I also understand the price differences in being able to shoot .223 vs 7mm vs 308 etc. I also understand the price differences in the SPS and 5R models. I wont say money isnt an issue, but I dont really have a budget for this project; meaning that if the 5R is worth the additional 400-500 dollars - Ill spend it. If it costs me 2 dollars a round to shoot it, or 80 cents a round to shoot it, Ill shoot it. On the other hand I dont need to be pissing money out the door.

Thanks in advance for your help guys.

I have been doing some research on the 700 today I think I will like this thread. From the stuff I am reading it is a accurate rifle out of the box but spend some money on good glass for it no bad reads as of yet check out savage also.

if you get a SPS you will probably want a better stock for it. it is the frog gun as PSS calls it because it jumps around so much.

i have a 700 LTR in .308, PSS has a PSS (of course), and a SPS both in .308. the 5R barrel is the same one used in the M24. my friend in iowa has a PSS in .308 with a 5R barrel.

.308 is the way to go for sure. if you have any specific questions about the LTR you can ask me otherwise i'll bet PSS will pop in here sooner or later, too. any 5R-specific questions i can forward to my buddy, he loves his rifle.

i found their reviews helpful... extremely helpful

i prefer Savage over Remington, generally speaking, but the 5R looks like a mighty fine piece of equipment [shocked]

that said, I have a Savage 10FP in .223 and the thing works great for me up to 200 yards w / 55gr ammo. twist is 1/9 and it's way cheaper than .308

my next .308 will be another Savage 10FP as well, as I'm sticking to what i know.

when the day / opportunity comes where I have a range greater than 300 yards available to me, i will explore something like this:

Mk2 Stock, OD Green (97), 26" Barrel, with Elite 4200 6-24x50mm Tactical Scope

i pfft to your accutrigger.

almost had a 5R PSS rather than my LTR that you sure seemed to like. [wink]

[smile] i still do. i just can't shoot them worth a damn... that SPS Tactical was kicking my ass at anything greater than 100 yards...

that glass was not too shabby at 200, kip and i had a small shoot off with it and naturally i lost. my group was 4 or so inches. no LTR out there though, haven't shot it at 200 yet. i want to now though.

So what is the difference between the accutrigger and the 700's trigger?

My brother just picked up a 10FP in .308 and the accutrigger is scary light... but I haven't every tried a Mod 700's trigger.

I hunt with a K-Bar....

I have a 700 in .308, a PSS, with Leupold glass, and the thing is a tack driver. I have just over 1,500 rounds logged through it, and it shoots the same way it did on day one - 1/2 MOA, on my worst days. I've shot 1/4 MOA at 100 and held that back to 2-300 yards. But on average 3-400 yards and beyond it holds 1/2 MOA. I was the top shooter at FBI Sniper School with that gun. So, as far as accurate - well what more do you want?

It can also take a beaten and still shoot tight groups - I used that gun up at the Storm Mountain Training Center for a sniper comp, beat the snot out of it for a weekend dragging it in the woods, going up and down that mountain. Put it at 100 yards the next day to check the zero and it was dead on balls accurate. It's a solid gun.

Remington 700 in .308 is what most of the armed professionals use. Good rifle, with an accurate cartridge that has plenty of power to do the job without beating up the gun or the shooter.

You may want to look at a Howa 1500 heavy barrel. I bought one 15 years ago. Just an incredible rifle. Same action as a 700, just beefier. Uses 700 mounts for rings. I like it in .308. 700 yards is not an issue. Mine likes the 165..168gr class of bullets best. I recently changed my scope from a 6-24x40mmAO to a 4-16x42mmAO. It is a more practical rifle now.

Hard to go wrong with a 700, especially if you are considering it a platform to build up a gun into what you really want. Tons of after market parts, pretty much the standard that all others are judged by.

The PSS and LTR are considered a very good out of the box shooter. But, a lot of serious shooters tend to use this as a staring point and work up from there. A lot of people have not been happy with the out of the box quality of the 700s including the pss and LTRs as of late.

As mentioned the Savage is a great out of the box shooter for a lot less money, but the stock sucks...

Also, you might want to look at the FN rifles, pretty amazing as well..

But whatever you get.. Buy the best scope that you can, this will make more of a difference than comparing an out of the box sav vs.rem vs fn vs etc..
