I have an old side by side shotgun that was my grandfathers. The finish on the metal and the reciver is nice but aged. I would like the gun taken apart, cleaned, made sure everything is in working order and the stock restored. The forestock may need to be replaced because the wood is soaked with oil and as a result the screws have pulled out. Any idea who I should go to for this and how much it may cost?

What kind of shotgun is it? Restoring older shotguns is an expensive proposition? I collect them, and I wouldn't want to know what I have spent fixing or restoring things. I would suggest having it fully stripped and cleaned, but not doing any restoration, if it were me I'd want to leave it as Gramps had it.

No matter what you decide to have done, it is important to use someone who knows what the are doing. Guns that are 50+ years old can't take the same wrenching that modern guns can- its easy to ruin screw heads or break internal parts when cleaning.

Here is the guy I use:

He is the best in New England, in my opinion. He isn't the fastest, or the cheapest (you don't have to be when people take $100k doubles to you), but he will do a fantastic job.

There is a guy I've heard of in CT, haven't tried him yet and can't remember his name.

stormsGSP, I just want it so I can shoot some rounds of trap or skeet with it. I do not want anything major done accept what I listed above making sure the original stock is strong enough for live fire. If it turned out it was not fit for live fire, I would leave it just like my grandpa had it and not fire it.

Evan

P.S. its a ranger chief that my grandpa bought at sears.

what make and model, there maybe new or used good wood to be had far cheaper than a redo, If the wood is as oil soaked as you think its no good to shoot anyway.
