Hi all,

I got introduced to a sweet Ruger 10/22 - I have a couple of questions...

Can the receiver be removed to thoroughly clean the rifle? It needs some TLC and there is a little corrosion on the receiver as well. There was some brass shavings in the magazine port but I cleaned them out and made sure the bore was clear.

I have a Hoppes 9 cleaning kit is there anything that will help minimize rust spots on the barrel? The bore is clear to the receiver but I need to run swabs through it. I need to make sure the receiver can move smoothly (it seems to but I have not run any rounds through her) it has a little corrosion on the surface but seems to move freely.

She NEEDS a really good cleaning and inspection... just wondering what you, the eminent purveyors of knowledge on NES, think and any suggestions for this gun.

You want to take the stock off? just in front of the magazine well, there's a screw, go ahead and remove that, the whole stock will come off.

This. If you have trouble removing the receiver from the stock, make sure your safety is in the middle, not on safe or fire.

It's also very likely that the bolt stop pin (toward the rear of the receiver) will fall out when you remove the stock, so keep an eye out for that. It's decent sized so you'll hear it hit the floor/bench. I had to use loctite on the screw that holds the stock on. It backs out just enough after a few mags that the receiver loosens up in the stock and my groups open up.

You made a wise choice buying a 10/22. The only reason I can think of to not buy a 10/22 is because you're buying two.

You chaps ROCK! I see the screw and will try it out tomorrow. It has a nice leather strap on it as well. I just want to be able to take it down and really clean and oil it!!

I don't want to tonight, Jack Daniels paid a call and we had a few "words" (ended amicably though). [laugh]

Any suggestions on what to remove surface corrosion/rust spots with?

Go to youtube its your best friend. There are people doing all sorts of modifications on there and showing how to take apart and put back together. It's really not that hard and pretty simple when you see it done and can go back and watch again if you mess anything up.

Crap, I forgot, remove the barrel band as well!

Yup. Youtube videos help as well. the 3 pins in the trigger group are easy to take out and bam! done. I've done trigger work on mine and have cleaned it down to every last spring, even though mine is only a year old. Good luck.

I will have to see if Hickok has a video on this gun... wait is there anything he doesn't cover? [laugh]

Oh yeah, the barrel band. Mine doesn't have one so I forgot about that. It does have sling swivels that I've been meaning to put to use.

Steel wool to remove rust - give it a good polish, then apply a thin layer of oil.

If the gun needs that much of a cleaning, I'd break it down completely and clean each part by hand. The rifle is super easy to detail strip and reassemble- just Google the How To guides.

Put it together the same way it came appart to clean. No extra parts on the bench is a good thing.
Then the next progression would be field stripping a Ruger Mark II....[rolleyes]
Then you will be ready to tackle anything grasshopper.

ugh, you guys are making me spend too much just bought a buffer and trigger group with autobolt and ext. mag release.

Another mod to 10/22 rifles I highly suggest is a spring kit from Kidd springs. Dirt cheap and you get 3 different ones, one for sub sonic ammo, standard ammo, and high velocity ammo.

Bolt Buffer

Also this nylon bolt buffer. I know it's something simple and you'll ask why. But it just dampens the sound when you cock it and it removes the metal friction. Cheap little add-on.

Thanks to the guys who mentioned the autobolt mod, I'll probably do that this week to my rifle.

Hell yeah, it took like 5 minutes with the Dremel. The only thing I hate about the 10/22 was that damn bolt release.

Why the hell do they make the bolt release not automatic? It can't be a safety thing, because trying to maintain good muzzle control while fumbling for that stupid lever is a real chore. People either end up filing it down or buying the part from Volquartsen so it's not like Ruger makes out... unless they have a financial interest in Volquartsen (bum bum bummmmmm).

It's been like that since about 1966, so I guess they have had time to think it over.

I'd hope they'd say "You know, everyone loves this gun but you know what the biggest complaint is? This dumb ass lever. We should consider changing that." It's a stamped part, the change should be almost zero cost.

Whatever, it was zero cost to me to grind it down so it's really no big deal.

Well if they didnt have the lever what would you tinker with? You Need something to do when you got the itch to tinker. Start with that so the wife doesn't go crazy. Then slowly spend your money on goodies

You sound like a very wise man. Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

I believe when I did mine I was in a mood to tinker. This is a valid reason to ship them as is. From Ruger's standpoint, once you're in there tinkering, you're probably likely to find something else you can't live without.
