Ruger 10/22

I was late to the 10/22 party, but now I'm hooked - already buying a barrel and all sorts of cool stuff, trying out different ammo to see what works best, etc. I love this thing. Go to the range and shoot 200 rounds for under $10? Can't be beat.

I love my 10/22 TD. I wish there were some replacement stocks available for this model though, I'd really like a shorter length of pull. It's an absolute must have gun IMO, reliable, fun to shoot and fairly priced.

Bolt Buffer

Also this nylon bolt buffer. I know it's something simple and you'll ask why. But it just dampens the sound when you cock it and it removes the metal friction. Cheap little add-on.

Has anyone tried this homemade nylon bolt buffer? I'm going to pick up a 1/4" nylon bolt tomorrow. I know the Kidd bolt stop is pretty cheap itself, but I like the idea of making it myself. Any reason I shouldn't?

Not sure why you'd make it yourself when you can buy one for $6-7. I like it because it eliminates the metal on metal friction.

Two reasons, neither are particularly compelling. First I kind of like the idea of making it myself rather than paying for the part plus shipping - it's not the cost savings so much as the satisfaction. Second, when I stop at HD I'll pick up a handfull of these bolts and make several of them. For the price I would pay for one from Kidd I can have 10 spares in my range bag to give away. There is almost always a 10/22 on the range when I go so I figure I can do an instant karma to anyone interested.

Thanks guys!

I started stripping the M-49 lever gun I have; I got some great info here.

Would you recommend ghost ring sights for a 10/22? I am also looking to get a Marlin Model 39A which has a scope and is in really nice shape. New toys are good :)

THAT'S what that random nylon bolt on my cleaning desk is for! I keep seeing it and I remember that I bought it, but not why I bought it. Good thing I just loctited the stock on.

Is this the catch all 10/22 thread?

I just bought a Shooter's Ridge 18" bull barrel for my 10/22 - slipped right in like it was supposed to, but it seems to be having difficulty ejecting rounds. I haven't gone to the range yet because I don't want to get all the way there without knowing if it will actually work (or at least suspect it will work). I tried lining up the extractor with the little notch in the barrel - putting it in the middle, to one side, then the other, but nothing seems to make it want to actually eject reliably. If I pull the action back slowly it might bring it out, but leaves the round in if I do it quickly. Any suggestions?

Is the notch narrower than the extractor? Maybe the extractor is not quite making it over the rim of the case because the notch is too narrow. Or maybe there's a little teeny weeny burr in the notch that's preventing the extractor from reliably getting all the way over the rim.

Can you post pictures?

After reaming out the chamber with a brush it got a little easier. It will now extract Federal and Remington bullets, but still seems to be having a problem with the CCIs. I need to get it up to the range to see what it does while firing before I go too much further.

I assume everything worked just fine with the old barrel, correct?

Did you clean the new barrel after you received it? Manufacturers love shipping stuff coated in thick oil to prevent rust. New chamber plus sticky oil plus any kind of crud would make the cartridges stick. The extractor spring may not be strong enough to overcome all that extra resistance, allowing the extractor to slide up and over the rim.

Go to youtube its your best friend. There are people doing all sorts of modifications on there and showing how to take apart and put back together. It's really not that hard and pretty simple when you see it done and can go back and watch again if you mess anything up.

This. I watched one helpful video and completely stripped and cleaned both my 10/22's that night in about half an hour.

BE CAREFUL YOU DON'T LOSE PINS. Some are tight and need the punch, others will drop right out—especially when you've already cleaned the weapon and are putting it back together. They are small, and they have a tendency to drop and roll under cleaning cloths, patches, etc.

The old barrel was fine. No problems.

I used WD40 in the chamber, scrubbed it out with a chamber brush, really worked it - nothing. But again, it's only CCI mini-mags. Federal, Remington and Winchester all work well. Obviously, the simple solution is to not use CCI, but that bums me out, as I find it to be the most accurate ammo out of those brands. Maybe with the new barrel one of the others will be better.

I'm kind of also hoping for a little break in - maybe running a couple thousand down the pipe this weekend will do the trick.

On the upside, my project is coming together nicely - still need some better glass and a decent bi-pod, but it's really getting there.

Looks good. I bought a carbine new, and want to try out a red dot, but haven't brought myself to mar the paint on the screws. I originally bought it because of the hi-viz sights, and if I tried out a red dot, I'd probably want to return it red dot - less. I really like this short carbine pretty much as is -- maybe the right answer is buy a second one...

How much of a difference does the nylon buffer make? I didn't even fire mine before I swapped that in, along with the VQ target hammer and the bolt release bit. That buffer was an absolute pain to install, and the next time I have the gun apart I'm liable to not reinstall it (assuming I can find the original stop).

[I wish I had gotten the trigger with adjustable stop. Stock is so-so, but I've noticed several times that I haven't let the trigger go far enough ahead to reset. User fault, but it'd be one more thing to try out. I do have to buy the Kidd receiver pins: my front pin is a pinch loose, but the rear is horrible. I was able to shim it with regular paper, and it's good now; but eventually I'll want to do it "right".]

I meant the problem area [wink]. Nice looking rifle, though.
Yeah, I knew what you meant - I just wanted to show off my handy work. Kind of like a proud papa. I'm having a good time building this thing. Just ordered a trigger kit which will be my next project.

BTW, I made a Karma thread for nylon bolt buffers - if anyone hasn't bought one yet, check out the thread. I doubt too many people will reply so you may get one by default.

I put a new 3-9x40 scope on my Ruger and rebuilt the trigger with Volquartsen shims and Wolf springs. My scope rings need to be changed because the front of the scope is just barely touching the barrel. But, my first trip to the range today made me feel a little better. Here's a picture of my last groups of the day at 50 yards.

Not quite MOA yet (1/2 at 50 yards, correct?), but it's getting there. I was pretty cold and had already shot about 200 rounds by the time I did this set, so my groups weren't fantastic. I think the rifle can do better than this right now if I was a little warmer didn't shoot so much before hand.

The only problem is the trigger was having some difficulty resetting occasionally - have to see if I have a burr on one of the shims or what the story is there. It would not reset unless I released my finger from it quickly. I'll break it down tonight and check it out.

Figured out why the trigger was having trouble resetting - apparently with the plastic trigger housing you need to leave the shims out of the disconnecter. Done. Now it's no problem.

I also did the auto bolt modification while I had the trigger assembly apart again. And I hesitate to say it, but I think it's done. I have just under $500 into it now. The only item I might consider later would be a Boyd stock, but for now I like the modified stock stock (that makes perfect sense, right?)

It looks nice! Glad to hear it's coming together.

I love the clean look of that bull barrel. Some day I'm probably going to have to buy one to satisfy that itch.

I can't wait to get it to the range to see how the new scope and rings are going to hold the zero, but the weather is not really cooperating. I actually considered going today despite the snow and wind, but I suppose it would be a pretty difficult day to judge how accurate a rifle is.
