I'm in the market for a new set of grips for my Ruger New Vaquero. This is a post 2005 Vaquero with the ILS. I have the stock black plastic grips on it now and I'd like a set of faux stag or maybe ivory for it. So here's what's I'm looking for... Faux stag or ivory for a New Model Vaquero for a price less than $60. I've looked around online and I haven't found much. Either they want $100+ or they're not for the New Vaquero. I even found one dealer that insists that the grips he sells only work with blued New Vaqueros and not with stainless... [rolleyes]

Supposedly, the New Vaquero will accept Colt SAA grips but I tried a set of grips from my 2nd generation SAA and they don't fit.

Does anyone have any experience with buying grips for the New Vaquero?

Grips for Colt Single Actions are all hand fit to each particular firearm. No two Colt Grip frames are exactly alike. Rugers on the other hand are made via CNC and should be an off the peg item.

You will not find real ivory for anyplace close to less then $450 a pair. Nutmeg Sports in CT is the guy for real ivory.

That leave only "fake" ivory for less than $60. You might take a look at:

Hope that helps.

The only cheap grips ivory would be Ajax grips, but they went out of business an were picked up by 2R.
It does not seem that they have grips for the New Vaq. You could go to E-Bay.
I use Eagle Grips on my Vaqs new or old - how ever more than 60$. http://www.eaglegrips.com/
You could go to the Classifieds of the ruger forum and check them out http://www.rugerforum.com - every once in a while they have a set.
I have had smooth ivory on my guns but they are slippery when wet so I had them checkered.

There are usually a lot of grips for the New Vaquero on ebay.
Ruger gripframes are not cnc machined except for where they mate with the cylinder frame.
They are castings.
The steel ones are pretty consistent in size, the stainless ones are different and not so consistent.
This has been an issue with the Ruger stainless gripframes for years.
Some gripmakers will not bother with them at all and some others require you to send in the gripframe for fitting.
You can file and sand the stainless gripframe down to fit the grips. It's not rocket science. It will take some time and effort to get a nice fit and finish.

Thanks all for the comments.

Jack, very interesting info. I'm surprised it's so difficult to find a decent pair of imitation grips at a decent price for a popular gun in current production.

I bought these online from the Ruger web site a year ago. I think they were $54
