I've had my SR 1911 almost 2 years now and have really enjoyed it. I haven't used it in probably 6 months and took it out of the safe this mourning and was horrified by what looks like the beginning of pitting on the frame. I rubbed it with an oily rag and most of it went away but a few marks would not come off. My safe is very dry and I store all my guns in Boyt gun rugs. It's supposed to be stainless steal and I know there are different grade of stainless but this is crazy. Anyone else have this problem and do you think Ruger will do anything for me. Thanks.

I had signs of rust on my full size. Called Ruger and they replaced the slide and gave me a cleaning cloth. Mailed out the complete pistol and had it back in about a week.

I just got off the phone with Ruger, They emailed me a prepaid shipping label and directions on how to ship it back to them. They assured me It would be taken care of. It's the frame on mine the slide looks fine. But i wouldn't mind if they gave me a new one. Thank guys.

Like I said I've had this for almost 2 years' have put well over 1000 rds through it and never had a problem. I always cleaned it after each use and if it sat I would take it out every 3 or 4 weeks and wipe it down with a oily rag and then a silicone rag and put back in the pistol rug. I was shocked when I saw this….. IMG_0980.jpg IMG_0984.jpg IMG_0986.jpg IMG_0985.jpg

Hopefully It will work out. Have they ever admitted they have a problem.

I had this happen to a blued Taurus 1911. I was going to school and didn't have time to do much shooting, so I oiled it up and put it in my safe. Went to go use it after I graduated and had all sorts of issues. The barrel bushing to barrel had pitting, the internals of the frame were rusted together, not to mention when I went to unlock the hammer, it stripped off internally and broke. Contacted Taurus and they gave me the "SOL" speech telling me I should of taken care of it. I even sent them photos of how it was stored, In a sealed container with Silica sacks and how you could see the oil on the firearm still. I will never buy a Taurus for as long as I live nor will I recommend one to anyone I like, someone pissed me off and that's another story.

That felt weird. I just gave the guy at Fedex a box with one of my favorite guns in it and he handed me a little piece of paper and said thanks see you later. I guess i've had to many ebay deals go bad over the years.

"Stainless" steel doesn't really exist. All steel will rust.

Some more than others.

I used to hike around with my SS Para Ordnance in a fanny pack in the pouring rain. Would forget to pull it out after for days before cleaning. When I did remember it would still be wet. I'd curse at myself for treating a weapon so poorly and give it a good wipe down. The rust marks I did end up getting were less than what was shown here.

I'd bet anything they used cheaper metal. Look how the rust really took off around the lettering. Remember to hit that with oil and a toothbrush and you should get more than two years out of the replacement...

Stainless Steel most certainly exists. It just isn't impervious to corrosion. I have yet to have a SS gun fail in this manner. I did, however, have a beautiful blued steel High Standard Supermatic Trophy 22 target pistol develop severe pitting after an extended stay in my safe. I think the cause was a bad pistol rug, but I'm still not sure. Dumped the suspect rug anyway.

My solution for this problem is gun rugs offered by Brownells. They are cloth, wool I believe, impregnated with anti corrosion chemicals. These rugs are rather simple with a velcro closure rather than a zipper and are thus rather inexpensive, less than $10 for most pistols. Cheap insurance IMHO.

Make sure you aren't cleaning with any chlorinated solvents. Chlorine breaks down the oxidation resistant layer of stainless steel.

"Stainless" just designates a level of corrosion resistance. It all rusts. Now should it rust in your gun safe? No. But I carry titanium pliers when I surfcast as no stainless steel can tolerate that much salt water exposure without corroding.

I have 4 other stainless guns in the same safe, in the same brand of rug, cleaned with the same solvents, 2 are Rugers and 2 Smith & Wessons and not a mark on any of them.

I don't know if I would store any firearm in a "rug". Those things will hold moisture for sure, even storage in a leather holster is trouble. I've had stuff stored on the shelves of the safe for years without a sign of corrosion. If they are not in the factory boxes they just lay about on the shelf. I'm not using a dehumidifier of any kind.

I picked up my new replacement SR1911 at Four Seasons today and I have to say costumer service at Ruger was great and Four Seasons didn't charge me for the transfer. I'm hoping this one has better stainless. I'll clean it tonight and hopefully shoot it tomorrow. Thanks all for your input.

I bought a full size in march 2013 the front sight broke off after a couple hundred rounds. I just had them send me a new one and that one broke off too. I bought a after market novak and found out Ruger cuts their dove tail at a different angle on top of that I had the pitting under the grips. A real bummer.
