I am looking to purchase my first handgun and have narrowed it down between the m&p40 and the sr40. I was wondering what everybody thought about these guns and help me decide.

SR40, it feels a lot nicer has a better trigger and is going to be about 100 cheaper. I traded my m&p9 for the sr9 and couldn't be happier. If you in the Malden area you could give my sr9 a try.

Have an M&P 40, and shot the SR40 multiple times. To me hands down the M&P is a better firearm. The SR40 feels like a toy, shoots OK and has that loaded chamber indicator thing....its just to nerf like. The M&P has a solid well built feel to it, (anyone I hand it to says as much) shoots great, looks the part of a combat/duty pistol. Before I get kicked in the nuts, this is just my opinion. :)

For your 1st gun either is fine. Both have good reliability, price and mfg warranty. Both also have there own respected groups of fan boys and haters...... look for used as it will save you in the long run. I sold my 1st purchase within 6 months as I realized it was not REALLY what I wanted. Dont count on easily concealing either full size, there big

The M&P 40 is feels alot cheaper built than the Ruger . My buddy has one . I have shot it (not impressed) . Ruger builds a really nice firearm for the money . I own about half dozen Rugers . I also own S&W firearms . I choose my Ruger for protection .

Have you shot either one yet ? Do you plan on doing alot of shooting ? IMO the 40 is not fun to shoot and the ammo is costly compared to say 9mm...........

Clearly everyone has their opinion. IMO, both are fine guns; the Ruger is going to be a bit cheaper, and won't need a trigger job right out of the box, but the M&P is a bit "simpler" (no manual safety, LCI, etc.) FWIW, but I suppose is arguably more of a service grade pistol.

Shoot 'em both, see what YOU like better. What about a G23?

I went to American firearms school in Attleboro and tries both the m&p and he ruger and liked the ruger better but my brother told me about ruger having a history of problems with the slide

I am an absolute M&P guy, own 4 of them and different calber barrels also. I see no reason for me to own an SR40.. but, here it is, just buy what feels good, if you shot em both and liked the Ruger, just buy it, and all the fanboys can save their typing skills for another thread..

After trying both at the club I actually settled for the M&P. Reason for me was simple, it just felt better in the hand than the Ruger. Try both then choose.

Your first gun is seldom your last gun. Try before you buy, then buy what you like better. Go green come to a shoot, try some other guns. Then prepare to buy more!!!

They are both fine weapons. I've owned both and am happy with either one...Neither model has been without their "teething" problems. The M&P has been around longer and finally has all of the kinks worked out. The Ruger is still teething. Currently there are issues with strikers breaking. But Ruger will make it right....

Honestly, I would say get the Ruger just to thank them for supporting the Massachusetts gun market. I sent an email to the CEO thanking him for getting their guns Mass certified...I'm a little pissed at S&W for not getting all of their M&P's Mass certified and they are based in this state!!

I'd go with the M&P.

I had an SR9c, didn't really care for it too much. I ended up trading it for a PPS.

I remember shooting the m&p at the performance center before it was ma approved. I liked it so much I asked about a price. The guy told me I couldn't buy one unless I lived in CT, I said "yeah, but I just shot it?" He then told me it wasn't approved for sale in ma. So I said let me get this straight, it's made in ma, I can shoot it in ma, but it's only available everywhere but ma? He said "exactly" we argued in circles, then I left with a feeling of betrayal...
