As pretty much "novice" class, I did own a PD before and sold it. I thought it was ok to shoot as far as recoil.
Recoil on the 3" model is about the same, with more blast and flip. I didn't mean to make it sound totally unusable or anything; if I didn't have a nice 3.5", the Pro would probably be my carry gun for warm-weather states. The extra length, I find, makes a difference hiding in the light cargo-style shorts that I favor.
I also run thin-grips, which make concealment even easier, while making recoil somewhat less pleasant, so you can see where my priorities have been.
For cold weather, longer is probably better.
