S&W 442 airweight cracked frame

I talked to S&W today. They will be replacing it free of charge, no questions asked and they send me a no-lock frame. I'm very happy concerning my dealings with S&W. The only thing that bugs me is that I have to pay the transfer fee at a FFL to accept back "my own" gun. Gotta make sure the FFL will transfer a "new" no lock frame to me tho.

Are they making you a new frame and stamping your original serial number on it ???
I've heard that they do this sometimes after completely destroying the original frame so that no two existing frames have the same serial number.

I have read that too, but no, he said it would be a new gun. I suppose I can ask if it's an option.

Just recently I snapped the trigger stud on my 642-2 and sent it to Smith. They're replacing the whole gun for me and I requested a 642 Pro Model (no lock & moon clips) while I was it. Who knows when I'll get it though. I called a few weeks ago and they were waiting for one be to be "allocated" to me. [rolleyes]

Due to current regulations (Obamanation) they can no longer destroy the frame by making a V cut and put the old sn on a new frame. I was told that it has been this way for about the last 6 years. In lieu of that, S&W said they would pick up the transfer fee in order for me to accept it. I'm very impressed and surprised.

Got the call from Four Seasons yesterday - gun arrived! Pretty pumped it's finally back. It's a no lock, but not a pro model like they said it would be. Either way - Smith made it right!

Was the original gun a Pro?

I would not accept a non-pro if that was what I sent them. The whole point of the pro is that it accepts moon clips. Thats a huge thing to give up.

Don

The original was a -1. Way before the pro model...

Oh ok. Like for Like. Sounds about as good as it gets from a CS perspective.

For what its worth, I complained a couple of months ago about S&Ws insistence that I ship a M&P15-22 into them for an extractor failure. They wouldn't ship me parts, they wouldn't even allow me to just ship them the bolt.

It was dumb. But they covered all shipping and had the gun back to me in about 10 days.

The original gun that I had sent was 642-2 Talo edition. When they said they needed to replace the whole thing, I asked for just a standard 642-1 and the obliged. The only thing special about the Talo were the grips, other than that standard gun. When I called to check on the status, I was told they were sending a pro model. I'm guessing the CS guy just misspoke. I was looking forward to moon clips though, but I'm satisfied either way.

Lawyers. If you reassembled wrong and blew yourself up, they could be held responsible.

I had the trigger pivot pin snap on my 642. Smith fixed it for free, new frame, but I had to pay transfer fee.[angry]

This is why you have the FFL you bought the gun from send it to smith, the good ones will not wail you on the way back.

It is unfortunate that none of the major gun companies seem to be willing to take advantage of the law that allows them to replace a broken frame or gun with a like model without use of an FFL for the transfer, even if the serial number changes.

Is that what the "Pro Series" moniker denotes, the ability to accept moon clips ???

If so, how does this apply to the 1911 Pro Series ???

Thats what the Pro means with respect to the 442 and 642.

In general the Pro series has some of the features often associated with Performance Center guns, but done on the normal assembly line.

I have a 4", 627 Pro Series, 8 shot .357 that takes moon clips, so maybe all the Pro Series revolvers do.

Well isn't that just craptastic! I was expecting to pay the transfer fee on mine, but I didn't have too. Maybe it was because I originally bought the gun at Four Seasons and had them ship it there? I definitely didn't have them ship it back, I sent it via FedEx.

Yup. I probably did it wrong. I bought at 4S, talked to S& W directly, then had it returned through Blue Northern. 4S probably would have covered it.

After reading the OP I was going to suggest you try my LCR but if your 442 is getting replaced free of charge, that's a moot point. That is impressive customer service, especially considering Smith's recent reputation.

interesting... so what is Smiths recent rep....

No offense Lev, but the reason I have the 442 is that the LCR didn't tickle my pickle. I <3 S&W revolvers, especially older ones.

Picked up my new one today. I can imagine others complaining about the wait time that I encountered but I figure it's all part of the process, especially considering the fact that I requested and was given a no-lock frame. Thanks again to all who helped and gave info along the way.

When they replaced mine I specifically requested a no lock since my original was pre lock. I was told that it might be a month or more because they didn't have any no lock versions in stock. It turned out to be about three weeks, but it was worth the wait.
