S&W M&P9fs: Greg Derr vs. APEX DCAEK

I had an Apex kit installed by John at Remsport. I had watched the installation videos and decided it was a bit more involved than I wanted to get into. After seeing the bag of tiny parts that I got back with my gun, I'm happy about my decision [grin]

Went out to the range today and the change is incredible. I'm sure the 'smiths known for M&P trigger work do a great job, but I have no complaints and would readily encourage others to go the Apex route. As for doing it yourself, check out the videos first [shocked]

Read what you just said. A "STOCK" M&P went that long. I said an M&P with a filed factory sear!!

#1, you weren't specific.

One would argue that the M&P itself needs no modifications for hard use. The stock, non-MA trigger is more than adequate for a combat pistol.

Are there any torture tests of M&Ps with the Apex parts installed?

This is exactly what I said vellnueve;

"Let me say this regarding the Apex sear vs. Gunsmith sear. The Apex sear is heat treated hardened steel. It will last forever and not wear on the contact surfaces. Having a gunsmith cut a factory sear is not a great idea for a hard working pistol. The factory sear is MIM with surface hardening. When it is cut by a gunsmith it cuts through the hard layer leaving a soft contact surface. Sears cut a few years ago by gunsmiths are starting to crop up with worn contact points that will not release the striker."

Read the entire post my friend, not just the last sentence.

Thanks for all the information. Very enlightening. Especially cool to hear from the smiths and the manufacturers in question. Ain't the internet great? [smile]
I would have thought that some gunsmith out there would offer inexpensive installation of APEX kit. Having the tools and experience, would make this option a nice quick way to make few extra bucks, IMO. And if one to work out a deal with APEX, even better. Just my opinion.
I'm still torn. APEX gives one better materials and fit, probably, but I'm not sure S&W materials are much worse. A gunsmith job is, well, a gunsmith job. The issue there is distance and pain involved in shipping the firearm. Oh well, I did not expect a clear-cut "best way" to go [thinking]

I had Greg Derr do a trigger job on my M&P full size 40 and honestly the difference from stock is stunning. I asked for a 4.5-5lb trigger, shorter reset, elimination of the over-travel and a smoother pull. He did a 4.5lb pull, the reset is much better, there is NO over-travel at all and the typical gritty/jerky trigger feel on the MA compliant M&Ps is gone. With his work... This is the closest to a 1911 trigger I've ever felt on any polymer gun. I highly recommend his work hes fair, professional and the turnover is fast.

The Apex Hard Sear and Ultimate Striker Block work in all M&P's,including the MA guns. The one single part that doesn't work in the MA guns is the Apex Sear Spring. However, we've custom engineered a Sear Spring specifically for the MA guns. At the moment, there are no MA kits on the web page, because we're having to reformulate the packages to accommodate all of the spring combinations.

We're basically able to achieve a trigger pull between 3 and 7 lbs on MA guns with different combinations of springs, assuming you're using the Apex Hard Sear and USB.

reset

I just put the Apex Sear and USB into my M&P9. The trigger was at 10.2 lbs out of the box and gritty with no decernable reset. Now the trigger is at 4.2 lbs, smooth as silk and you can hear and feel the reset. I am very impressed!
Probably not as good as a Gunsmiths work but for me its perfect.

Just to add some clarification, I have a couple of guns with "MA-corrections" by Greg and I can definitely at least feel the reset on my M&P9.

It would be interesting to perform some kind of objective (unbiased) test on the work by a number of different gunsmiths or methods such as APEX.

A similar thread on this subject has been written in the last couple of years, I forget the details but at the time thought it's a preference issue. Never fired a Colt revolver but isn't it different than a S&W? I do not think I know how to describe the differences. Any poet-engineers out there?

Scott,

I just ordered (and received) an Apex DCAEK kit for my MA-compliant M&P 9mm. Since I have all the rest of the parts, how do I get the sear spring I need for MA M&P's? Can the one (that is not useful)that is included in the kit exchangeable?
