So, I own nothing with a wood stock. Literally. My entire safe is full of Killy stuff.

Needless to say, might be time to add some fuddliness to the safe. I was thinking a scoped lever. I know nothing about them. This will be possibly for hunting up north, range, trunk, beater.

School me.

If you are going to go full fudd, why not a scoped bolt gun, short action, .308.... eg, like scout rifle concept or something. At least that way you can feed cheap ammo into the thing. (in relative terms, even if .308 milsurp is still going to be cheaper than .30-30, assuming there is any .308 left after this week, anywhere... lol. I'd much rather have a small, mag fed bolt action than a lever gun.

Suggestions?

If you're gonna get a lever dont put a scope on it. shoot it with irons or peeps

if you want a bolt gun honestly right now maybe a .30-06, .243 (Just due to the availability) or if you wanna take the time to reload .260 would be dope.

I want my .30-06 back so bad that i willing to pay the 1$ per round that it was costing me with pleasure

Assuming you want a lever because you just plain want a lever...

If it's a range gun, get a .357. That way you can feed it fairly cheap and shoot the dickens out of it.

What game "up north"? For deer, a .30-30 or a .35 Rem will do it. Neither are cheap calibers, the .30-30 is usually easier to find. Adam and I both run .35 Remington Marlin 336's just because. You'll probably want/need to go bigger if you are hoping to win the moose lottery.

We like the Marlins (obviously). Nice solid guns and it should be easy to pick up a used 336 in either of the .30 rifle calibers for not too much money. The .357's are out there but scarcer.

Henry makes nice current production stuff.

Re: scopes. I have a ghost ring on my 336. Adam prefers working with optics and has both of his Marlins scoped. Works fine either way. For a brush hunting/truck gun I'd be a little leery of scoping it, but it all depends on exactly what you intend to do with it.

I'm a fan of the Marlin guide guns....the stainless/laminate ones.

Id go with a 357 for practical-ness or a 45-70 for buffalo "up north"

I've had scopes mounted on a few of my centerfire lever guns, but never really cared for them and ended up taking them off.
IMHO, it ruins the looks of a classic lever gun.
If you're determined to do it, use a Marlin or Henry that ejects out the side.
Or maybe a Winchester 88, Savage 99 or Browning BL81.

Winchester 94's are tough because the shells eject out the top and you have to use a taller than normal scope mount, which throws off your cheek-to-stock head position, and sometimes the shell bounces off the bottom of the scope and falls back into the action causing a jam.
They also have side mounts to offset the scope to the left, but they look odd, and again it throws off your head position.
The third option is a forward mount like a Scout setup, but you'll need a special long eye relief scope.

Only one of my lever guns has a scope these days, and that's a Winchester 250, side ejecting .22, which I bought used with the scope already installed.

This.

I have been drooling over one of these for a while. I just wish it were 16 or at most 18" barrel.

I have thought about buying a beater and have a smith work it over. Maybe once I finish the 2 other rifle projects that are open ended.
