I just purchaced a G19 that is badly in need of a refurb, I know Glock will do it..... they e-mailed me the instructions but I am unsure as to how to ship it to them. Apparently you just can't go down to the Fedex store and drop it off, I have never shipped a handgun before so I am wondering if anyone else here who has shipped a pistol to Glock, how did you do it?

Thanks,

Go to a fedex depot with the copy of their regs. DO NOT go to a store, or any outlet with it.

Another (better) option is to pay someone like Four Seasons to send it out for you as a repair. It'll probably be cheaper and less hassle.

Yea, that's kinda what I was thinking. when it comes back I would assume there would have to be an adult home to recieve it and that will be problematic.

Well, either two things will happen...

You will get to play yellow tag disco chasing them around trying to get the gun back. Sucks.

Someone screws something up badly and you end up with a box with a handgun in it thrown behind the bushes in front of your house or hanging off the door handle in a bag. [laugh] (unlikely, but I've heard of people getting guns shipped to them where this happened!)

Yep. I know of one firearm that was lost because of this.

Used the UPS location in South Boston twice without a single problem.

Exactly. If the UPS counter person asks what is inside the sealed box, you answer, "Parts."

Or go through a dealer.

I shipped my G21 back to Glock for a full refurb. Went to the FedEx main branch in South Boston. I told them I was shipping a firearm and the panic on her face was precious. I had the FedEx policy printed out just in case. She said "a gun?!" I said "yes, it is going back to the factory for service, FedEx does this, here is the policy". She actually said, "oh yea I know, I just forgot the special code we are supposed to use." She asked her supervisor and she really panicked, "A GUN, IS IT LOADED?!?" I said, "what do you think? Of course it isn't loaded." It got there fine and I got it back via UPS, picked up at the branch no problems. The only downside (other than the idiots at FedEx), was that it was really expensive. I would check out Mikes suggestion and use an FFL. Mike indicated in other posts that they can use second day instead of priority overnight so it should be much less $$. Glock pays the return postage which is awesome. My G21 looked brand new, as I had them refinish the slide and barrel (you have to request this) Glock knows how to take care of their customers!

Business End Custom, in Tewksbury does some nice Glock work. He's an FFL and can ship it if you two looked it over and decided it needed to go back to Glock. He's also an NES member. Maybe send him, Lou, a PM.

I sent a slide, no barrel, to them for refurbishing throught the U.S.P.S. and it came back from Glock in less than a month. I was asked if there was anything explosive, hazardous etc., and I replied no, it's just a piece of metal. I think it cost approx. $8 to ship, much cheaper than FedEx or UPS.

With only one exception, every firearm shipped to me has ended up on my porch or leaning against my garage door

Yes, shipped legally as a handgun. OP - PM me if you want details.

I sent in my G19 for 23 dollars using my local UPS Store.
That's very cheap for UPS Next Day Air.. If you are shipping to Georgia from the north east, it will cost about twice that.
Typically, it cheaper to go to a dealer and have them ship it since they can send it USPS ground.

I came home to my Garand on my front steps

If you shipped it from a "UPS Store" as you claim, and not a "UPS Depot", it was done so in violation of UPS store policies that prohibit them from handling guns. If you got it for the price you mentioned, it was also shipped in violation of the UPS "overnight so our people don't steal it from you" requirement.

The good news is that you probably didn't violate Federal law by shipping your G19 from a local UPS store, as long you told UPS that the package contained a handgun.
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.
[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30]

UPS probably did a mistake (based on the low shipping cost) by not sending it next day air according to their own policy, but that's not your problem (if you told them you were shipping a handgun).
Handguns, as defined by 18 U.S.C. § 921,will be accepted for transportation only via UPS Next Day Air Services, specifically, UPS Next Day Air[SUP]®[/SUP] Early A.M.[SUP]®[/SUP], UPS Next Day Air[SUP]®[/SUP], and UPS Next Day Air Saver[SUP]®[/SUP]. (Note: UPS Express Critical[SUP]SM[/SUP] Service is not available for firearms).

Firearms (including handguns) may be shipped only through a UPS Scheduled Pickup Account (specifically, Daily Pickup, Daily On-Route Pickup, UPS Smart Pickup[SUP]®[/SUP], and Day-Specific Pickup), or through a UPS Customer Center (counters at UPS operational facilities). Note: Firearms (including handguns) are not accepted for shipment via, UPS Drop Boxes, UPS On-Call Pickup[SUP]SM[/SUP], or at locations of The UPS Store[SUP]®[/SUP] or any third party retailer. When you are shipping a package that contains a handgun, you must verbally notify the UPS driver or UPS Customer Center clerk.

There is no notification required by law, providing the firearm is being shipped to a licensee.

My quote was from ATF's website, and I didn't see any exceptions when shipping to a FFL. Do you know where I can find this exception?

Yes, 18 USC 922...

(e) It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to deliver or cause to be delivered to any common or contract carrier for transportation or shipment in interstate or foreign commerce, to persons other than licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, or licensed collectors, any package or other container in which there is any firearm or ammunition without written notice to the carrier that such firearm or ammunition is being transported or shipped;...

Correct on both counts. I guess you could say I got away with one by shipping a declared yet "disabled" (removed the barrel - wrapped it in bubble wrap) firearm 2nd Day Air instead of Next Day back to Glock... however I wasn't purposefully trying to get away with anything. In fact, when the newbie employee received confirmation from the owner that it was "OK - only if shipping back to Glock", she asked how I wanted it shipped. I went with 2nd Day Air as I knew Ground was a strict no-no.

For the record, UPS did see the declaration and bump it to Next Day Air in conformance with their policies (most likely during sorting). As always, YMMV but there are ways to avoid the ridiculous charges FedEx rapes gun owners with. I too had the lady with the "OMGWTFBBQ!!" shocked face when I declared a firearm for shipping. She seemed to enjoy quoting me 98 dollars with all the bells and whistles.

The guys at Collectors in Stoneham were nice enough to offer to do it I just didn't want to make the drive.
