Since the election I"m thinking maybe it's time to go black. I have no knowledge yet about the darkside. FS has this on their site. Any thoughs which one?

Smith & Wesson M&P-15 ORC in 5.56mmLevel

1: As it comes from the factory $819
Level 2: With MAGPUL flip up F & R sights $899
Level 3: F&R sights, quad rail and vertical forend $1025
Level 4: Same as above but with MAGPUL sling: $1099
NEW! Level 5: The "FS Operator". This has The Works. F&R flip up sights, MAGPUL pistol grip and MAGPUL MS3 sling. But instead of the MAGPUL handguards we installed an MI (Midwest Industries) quad rail, angled fore grip (AFG), ASAP sling adapter and BCM Gunfighter charging handle. All you need on this package is ammo. $1249
NEW! Level 6: The "Magpul Edition". MOE handguard, MOE stock, MOE grip, MBUS F & R sights, MS3 sling and MVG forward grip. $1148

Once you go black, you'll never go back. I'd say pick up the base model and modify as you'd like - but it can get expensive depending on your taste. The 'Magpul edition' one is pretty tacticool and Magpul makes solid parts.

Noone here can tell you which one to get. Its all your preferences. You're going to need SOME sort of a sight for the rifle so start there and then figure out what you want for furniture and stock. Price out what you're thinking and compare.

I've been looking more and more at the m&p 15 sport. A great beginners black edition AR. I'll only need to put on an optic and I should be all set. But who knows, they are very 'affordable' for an AR.

Personally I'd just get the one with the front and rear iron sights (you are going to have to purchase sights anyway if you get the base model) learn to use the iron sights if rifle shooting is new to you, and then customize as you go along. Decide for yourself what you need or want or what you don't need or want. Some people like the forward grip others not, for instance, others like to attach every doodad known to man and turn their Black Rifle into some kind of Swiss Army knife, it all depends on what you want. Personally, I rather adopt a pay as you go. Don't pay for something you don't need or don't like. Don't be influenced by what someone else uses. The AR platform has become a lot like the 1911 in that it can be highly personalized depending on your own preferences and requirements.

Rifle shooting is not new. I have a Garanad, M1 Carbine, and a few 22's.

YES, you won't regret it. I went with option #4 and was very pleased with my purchase. The only thing I removed was the F&R sights as I mounted a large Nikon scope. Good luck on your purchase..

you cant loose with the M&P, i really like mine and its the no frills sport model. just picked up a cheap optic and riser mount for play time, but kept the irons. The iron sights that came on it were surprisingly good! Weigh your options bud, i got the sport and spent the rest of my budget on ammo and a couple mags and I could not be happier! later down the road i also put a magpul MIAD on it and like that as well.

Go for it. I put a few hundred into my Sport and turned it into a beastly AR.

ive got well over 1k rounds thru my sport. it may be "affordable" but i haven't had a failure of any kind out of it in that time. I will be putting many more rounds thru it in the future as ive finally gotten a membership to a real club. Will let ya know what happens if anything! Do yourself a favor, buy the sport. it will make you smile...i know mine does [smile]

FS just got some of the M&P 15FT's in, I had Carl put one aside for me and pick it up Saturday. There's a TON of options for them though, so I'd go see some and see if you can get a feel for what you like. You can't go wrong with going black though....You can always get a base model and upgrade it as you go along or come into some cash.

@Derek, I loved the sport when I got it, but adding a quad rail made it look a lot better IMO. The stocks that they come with aren't bad if you like it that length, but I cut that one off and put the Magpul CTR on it. I'm very happy with the Sport and once im done building my hellspawn Detroit arms build, it will look like an airsoft gun in comparison [wink]

I bought my first AR in March. My opinion? Get the sport unless you have actually handled and shot one with any options. Better to get the sport and add what you like as you see fit. Removing options that you don't like is wasted money. Been there, done that on my first. My second was a much more thought out purchase. AND, already planning my third which I will build myself.

I always said that I would never go black...always loved the walnut wood stocks. Then a few years ago, I took the plunge. Once you go black, you never look back... [wink]

Well, I put this on hold for a while but just emailed Carl and asked to get on the list for the

Smith & Wesson M&P-15 ORC in 5.56mm

Better get one before Obama won't let me!

Good luck trying to get that rifle for $1249 given what is currently going on.
