So I've been looking at getting into shotguns and have been checking the classifieds religiously for any updates. I noticed this week that DSG has a shotgun deal for $20 off anything under $399, 50 off $400-$799 and $100 of anything above $800. I've been looking at something simple to start off with, that I could use as an all rounder, testing trap, home defense and hunting...not looking for perfection in those categories, but just to see how I like it. That would make their Mossberg 500 field/deer combo $330, which seems like a decent price, considering it comes with the CANTILEVER RIFLED SLUG AND VENT RIB BARREL WITH 2.5x20 SCOPE...granted the scope is fairly useless. I know it's been on sale before for about $300...but that seems to be around Black Friday time...and I don't really want to wait that long, I figure I'll get that $30 bucks back with the 8 months I have ahead of time. I'm not familiar with what other deals Dick's usually has around shotguns, do they go on sale often? Should I get it now or just wait? I looked at the Rem combo too, but when I went to look, they didn't have any in stock, so that's kind of out of the question. What do you all think, any other suggestions?

Well you can't shoot one without pulling the trigger on it, YMMV.

Haha, very true...I was mostly wondering if anyone knew if there were better deals to wait for, other than the ones closer to Black Friday that they do regularly on Shotguns...though the horror stories of firearms purchases at Dick's sound a bit stressful...at least I'll know what to expect -__- ...though I feel that it is very likely for me to end up with a shotgun by the end of this week!

I got that deal at Dicks for $299, plus an extra 10% off for opening a credit card account with them. No drama, but it depends if you want to wait or not for the sale. The barrel is way too long for home defense though. My first shotgun was a maverick 88. Shorter barrel and higher capacity. I never hunted with it, but the first time I ever shot skeet I was better than my friend with a $600 hunting gun. And it takes mossberg 500 accessories.

Was that near Black Friday? The 10% is definitely enticing, but the idea of opening more credit cards is not something I'm interested in at the moment, as I don't want to risk hurting my credit score since I'll be looking into purchasing a home soon! Yeah, I don't plan on using the 28" for home defense...and unless I feel like shooting a slug through an intruder...the 24" barrel probably won't work either! But I figured...then I just need an 18.5" barrel and I have a shotgun for 3 different uses! :) ...The Maverick I believe is like $220...so that would probably be around the same price I'd figured if I wanted additional barrels? I also heard the 88 was lighter too, so the recoil felt stronger?

I picked up a Mossy Field 500A cheap at Dicks last year and it was great decision. Go get one! You will never find a better shotgun for under $300 brand new.

Just don't buy a Mossberg semi auto. I bought one last year and had nothing but trouble with it. When it failed at a three gun match, I borrowed another Mossberg from a fellow competitor which performed flawlessly. When I returned the gun I complimented my friend on the performance of his Mossberg. He then admitted that he had the same problems I had and that his new gun had just been serviced by the factory for the same problems.

My 2 cents. Buy the 870 a used one the 870 wingmasters are nice guns. Nice blueing and wood. Can be found on almost any gun shop rack for reasonable prices. I have owned both moss and rem the Remington was and from the few I have handled recently a better gun overall.
The 870 eepress (if they still call it that) DSG sells is pretty much a "do all " shotgun. As long as the gun shoots where your looking.
Don't be so tempted by the combos. Unless its a rifled slug barrel and you going to shoot sabots style slugs.
You can always pick up a 18" barrel used somewhere for a shorter gun.
For home defense a rem 870 20g youth model is nice and compact.

Ps I swear there where at least 4 870s on the Plymouth dsg rack last week.

One thing I learned over 25 yrs of buying shotguns used.
They are either heavily used or like new with some handling dints and scratches. I am not afraid of the gun that has honest cared for wear. I used to buy a lot from kittery trading post when we would go camping every year. Might try them.

Hmm, I suppose I'll keep my eyes open for a decent used 870...otherwise...I'll wait til the Combo goes on sale for closer to $300...talked to the guy at the counter...he said it was likely for it to go on sale further once the weather gets warmer...sigh...no shotgun yet I suppose [crying]

If your new to shotguns and have not tried trap shooting yet go try it. Most clubs have guns and ammo for new shooters to try. I shot trap with my 870 express for many years while I saved for a "trap" gun. I won several league shoots and a club championship with that gun.
Keep in mind what you really might want out of a shotgun.
I think rem now offers the combo with a rifled slug barrel vs 20 yrs ago it was a smooth bore. Depending on your hunting desires you may never have a need for the rifled barrel? Are you going to hunt? Are you going to shoot sabots ammo that can cost 2$ or more a shell?
Plan on shooting trap? The express although I shoot mine well is not suited well for trap. I this k if I did not bird hunt with that gun as a kid I would have struggled much more trying trap with it.
Knowing what I know now I would find a nice 870 trap model used. You can change out stocks and barrels to your blue in the face or broke.
One advantage over buying a 870 wingmaster or trap model is you can recover close to the cost if its not for you. The moss500 or rem express not so much.
Also the scope wont be useless on a shotgun. The scope in the combo maybe shit though? I have not kept any scope in any combo pack in the sub 500.00 range.
A rifled slug barrel with the ammo you find shoots well with can be very accurate as shotguns go. With a decent scope you can reach out there.
My rem 870 smooth bore with Remington slugsters is good to 75yards with minute of dear accuracy. That's about as far as I can clearly see a deer and take a good shot. I have not hunted in 20 years but most deer in the area I hunt your lucky to see a deer beyound 40ish yards let alone get a clear shot.
Take your time try some guns if you can. Don't rush I to a gun just because of sale price. You can usually find better deals through someone else's mistake or impulse buying.

Those Dick's deals can not be beat.

Last black Friday I purchased a Benelli Montefeltro from Dick's. Retail price on that model is 999, after all the coupons and discounts, it was mine for under 800.

Do you really need/want both barrels on the combo? The 28" vent rib single barrel model should be around $220-240 if I remember correctly. You can later find other barrels online for around $100

Hmm...I'll check it out, my orientation for BRP is tomorrow...and I believe their Trap Club meets tomorrow as well...so I'll go observe either way. Yeah, I suppose the rifled barrel will not be of great use to me. I plan on trying to hunt deer eventually...I don't really know much as far as bird hunting goes around my area. I'm mostly interested in getting into trap, but also something I can use to swap out the barrel for home defense...so I don't plan on being a pro at trap, just for fun at the range.
Yeah, a scope I'm sure can be useful on the shotgun, what I meant was that I heard that the scope that comes with the 500 combo is pretty useless and won't last more than one season haha! That's why I decided to hold off on the deal mostly...I didn't want to make the impulse buy due to the deal...though if it were the 299 deal they sometimes have on that combo...I most definitely would have made that impulse buy [rofl]
I was trying to find a used shotgun around the 200-300 range...but that has been fruitless so far. Most of the wingmasters that I have seen for used are in the 350-400+ range... :\

Mac1911 summed it up well by asking what you want to do with it.

That drives everything. Like Mac, I started with a 870 express while I saved for a real trap gun. Unlike Mack, I didn't win any championships. But it sufficed until I found a great Left handed Rem 1100 special trap with a 32 inch (!!!) barrel.

When I took up sporting clays, the 870 served me well there also until I could afford a over/under 12 gauge.

I used the 870 to hunt pheasant until I bought a Beretta 687 o/u.

I used the 870 to hunt ducks until I bought a Benelli SBE II

In summary, I used my 28" 870 as my intro gun for every shotgun game I ever played, until I got a more specific gun.
I'd get a used one if I were you. I've seen about a half dozen late model 870s in the last couple of years and I'm not impressed.

Don

p.s. oh yeah, I forgot. I shot my 870 in 3 gun the first 3 times I did it, until I got a Benelli M2.

But can all those guns go and do everything the 870 did.[wink]
I bought my 870 e press in 1988. The finish and wood are just plain.
I cant complain other than that.
Look hard enough you will find a good gun under 350.00

Yeah, I noticed the Steven's shotguns...but I know nothing about them as far as durability and reliability...one of those too good to be true feelings! haha ...Definitely keeping my eyes peeled on deals! Thanks!

those stevens are made somwwhere other than US. rumor mill is parts made in china assembled in turkey or brazil or something.

Ive been getting into trap more and more and as nost of my guns are hunting configured i wanted a cheap trap gun so i bought a stoeger m2000 closeout at dicks for 299. Its a benelli m2 clone as stoeger is owned by beretta. It has the same inertia system.

Its been fantastic, runs mint.

Beretta owns many Names but the guns are made by other companies. Corners are cut for the stoger vs the benelli. The recoil system is different also
If it works for you that's all that matters.

Mark, the Stoeger has nothing to do with Beretta. Its a Benelli M2 clone because its made by Benelli.

Benelli, Franchi, and Stoeger are all Benelli companies. Benelli is the most expensive, then Franchi, then Stoeger.

The Benelli's are tough and light. If I didn't care about weight, I might be inclined to try a Stoeger. I own a Super Black Eagle II and a M2 and am very very happy with both of them. In a target gun, the extra weight of the Stoeger might actually be an advantage. I'm sure the inertia system in the Stoeger is very reliable. It sounds like a great score.

I would probably jump at finding the m2000 stoeger, but alas I have yet to fond any such close outs...woupdnt pay msrp for a stoeger though, heard mixed things and if you get one with no issues, then it's a steal!

Pump shotguns are the way to go. People forget that the seals have to be maintained on the semi-autos. Most people don't but its in the manuals. I am a victim of Murphy's law so I try to limit my exposure to it with complicated machines that have lots of parts to break

No seals in my Benelli

[smile]and it doesn't have any o-rings either.
