So I am looking to buy a new 9mm for the range and to do a "tactical training" course. I am torn between the Sig P229 the Smith MP full size, and the Glock 19. The Sig is the most expensive at 800, while the glock is between 5-600 and the Smith is just over 500. I like the Sig the most but want to get the opinions of fellow owners of these firearms.

G19 hands down. Get your hands on one and see if it fits your hand properly, and if it does... you're good to go. If you are really looking at guns that large, you might want to look at the G17, as well.

Thanks Mike. Is there a reason you are adament about the glock? I have a feeling it will be between the Glocks and the Sig.

your best bet is probably the glock or the sig. they both have pre-ban mags. The M&P doesnt have preban mags, but im pretty sure it can use mags from some other gun (cant remember which one off the top of my head)

I own a sig226 and a M&P9c both in 9mm. they are both good guns and have performed well for me and i would buy both again. Personally I don't like glocks; the ones I've held have never felt right in my hand. Go to the store and see which of the 3 feels and points the best for you. If you get a chance to shoot all three that definitely helps but I know that can be tough to manage.
Having the option for preban mags is certainly nice but not a deal breaker for me.
The M&P will need about 80-100 dollars worth of aftermarket parts (trigger) and a couple hours of your time to really make it shine. That puts some people off but it didn't bother me since the gun wasn't too much $$ to start with and I like to tinker.

I loved my glock 23. But at the end of the day i was able to aquire my target more naturally and shoot more consistenly with my MP.

I personally love the feel and look of the Sig 229 Elite but the cost, weight and capacity compared to the Glock make it a no brainer that the Glock 19 is the way to go, especially in MA where the M&P doesn't have large capacity magazines available. I would like to see S& W come out with something to compete against the G19 I know 2 rounds and a 1/2" isn't much difference but a compact (not subcompact) fits my hand better.

The G19 is a persistent gun in my collection. I had a 2nd gen and an old 3rd gen before and I had sold both, and I hated myself about an hour after I sold the 3rd gen. Then I got another one (like new 3rd gen) and it has stayed ever since, and not going anywhere. I've also carried a G19 on and off over the years. I've carried a bunch of different guns over the years and by "days carried" there has been a G19 in the holster probably 60% of the time, which is more than all the others combined. It just carries well, even in the summer. I haven't carried it much recently but only because I've been lazy and I haven't set up my new G19 holster to fit the belt I have yet, so I've been a lazebag and used the G26 for awhile now. (which is a good little gun in its own right.)

I've also owned a ton of sigs. At one point I had a P226 9mm, a P239 9mm, 2 P229 .40s, two P228s (P228 is 9mm only), a P220, a P220-ST, a P239, and a P226 X-Five Competition. All of them are gone, and the only ones I sorta miss are the X5 and the Black P228 I had.

Sig does make a good gun (although their QC has fallen as of late, but that is a whole other topic by itself, I would have no hesitation trusting a lot of the used ones out there, though. ) but I kinda got sick of DA/SA, and in some cases, the long Sig SA reset, and I've found that the Glocks are also easier to carry because they are flatter and weigh less. The Glocks are also pretty easy to work on overall, although I have torn down Sigs as well. They are both good handguns, you just have to choose what works for you, ultimately. I just find its hard to hate a double stack 9mm Glock like the G19.

I've ruled out the M&P for right now because of the capacity, and because my Dad already has a M&P 40c. I have handled a glock before but never shot it. I am actually going to be shooting a P229 Sunday so I can get a feel for what it's like. I am going to try and get my hands on a friends Glock before the weekend, but as of now I am leaning towards the P229. The inner child in me says buy both.. But I shouldn't listen to him... right?? [devil2]

Glock - just my preference. Nothing wrong with the Sig or M&P but the M&P will need the work and no pre-ban mags. To keep the cost down I kept the Sig out. They are all good guns, you can't really go wrong with any of them.

I like the M&P personally. The Glock simply does not fit my hand right, and the sig grip, for lack of a better term feels "backwards" to me (the thicker part of the grip is in the front?). It was a case of the OJ syndrome, I had to keep trying until I found one that fit. [grin]

I've owned all three and would pick the Glock 19 over the other two any day of the week. I just couldn't ever get comfortable with either the grip or the trigger on the Sig. The M&P is nice, and in a free state it would be a definite contender for the Glock, but no hi-caps and a crappy MA trigger put it below the Glock in my eyes.

I have both a G19 and a Sig P229. Love em both. But I would probably take the Glock over the Sig for most applications.

You should buy whatever fits YOUR hand and which you shoot best.

+1 on the Glock 19. I just got a Gen4 and I love it. I have had a 229 before and after a day of carrying you really notice the difference between the two in weight. I also like the constant trigger pull on the Glock. If consistency is the key to good shooting then it doesn't get any more consistent than a striker fired trigger. Same pull every time. IMO you can't get as consistent with DA/SA because of the two different trigger pulls.

+1

The Sig is in a different class than the Glock and the M&P. If it's between the Glock and the M&P, I would definitely go with the Glock as long as it feels nice in your hand. Glock, has capacity, proven reliability, parts and information everywhere. Glock and M&P are striker fired and safe action. The Sig is not polymer framed and primarily DA/SA.

It depends what you are looking for a what you find desirable. You said you wanted it for the range, the Sig makes a great range gun.

I talked to an officer at the hunting class I took and he said its illegal to sell but not to own. I have ltc class a. He said all liability is on dealer. I could not find anything that says I can't own it.

He's wrong. In MA, it's illegal to privately own a mag with > 10 round capacity that was manufactured after 9/94. We are talking about magazines here, not handguns.

I'll repeat it. It's a felony.

Ok. He must have been talking about prebans for glocks and just not have been specific. Go to know I was actually going to order one this weekend. Thanks for the heads up.

You own a postban HI-CAP in MA and get caught you end up going bye bye unless you are a cop and it is for work.
