Good morning everyone. I would like to ask your opinion regarding the Sig P239M and S&W Shield in 9MM. This will be for my summer carry and intend on wearing it with an IWB holster.

I have a M&P 40 now and love it after having a trigger installed. I have not had the opportunity to have a Shield in my hand, but the dimensions are about the same compared to the Sig.

Looking at these two for the price, the Sig with night sights appears to retail for $1000 while the Shield is $449. If I factor in a trigger job and night sights that is going to bring the shield up to $800+.

I have not had the opportunity to fire either so I am looking for opinions from those of you that have. Any advice is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Jeff

Don't understate the size difference between the two; the charm of the shield is its narrow profile, approx. 0.3" less than the P239. The Shield is also noticeably lighter.

IMO night sights are useless if you can't see what you're shooting at, so carry a flashlight instead. It's easy to aim the profile of your regular sights toward an illuminated target.

You can get a Shield for $429 when you pay cash at Four Seasons, then have the Apex duty carry kit installed for less than $200.

Shield w/Apex ends up about $200 cheaper than the P239, and with regard to dimension and weight is a better choice for CC.

OK thanks... So the Shield has a noticeable weight difference, but can you feel the weight difference in felt recoil? I want to be able to have follow up shots on point as accurate as I possibly can. I have a Streamlight TLR-1 HL on my M&P 40 and it is a great light. I can carry my Streamlight Flashlight with me so its not a big deal. I can save the money there on the Shield.

The recoil difference should be negligible. 9mm is pretty soft shooting and if you already are comfy a .40 then you should be g2g. The weight of the SIG will reduce recoil somewhat but again it will be negligible. Biggest factor should be which fits/ feels better in your hand. That's the best determining factor for how well you'll shoot it.

I've never heard of Acushnet, MA but if you've ever around Malden we can shoot both down here. I have a Shield and my father has a P239 I can borrow whenever I want.

This.

Hand fit is going to be the biggest issue I think. With the pinky extender, the Shield is fine in my hand (big hands), but without, it is distracting to me.

And that nicely sums it up. Based on your preference for the M & P 40, I'd definitely go with the Shield.

It is right next door to New Bedford if that helps. I appreciate the offer but I think you are 1 1/2 hours from me. I will have to see what I can do, when do you think you would be available? What range are you a member of? I'm just trying to figure out the logistics...

Thanks!!!!

That is one of my biggest concerns is the fit in my hand, but after your comments it appears it won't bean issue. Recoil doesn't seem to be an issue either. if I can shoot them with JCV that would be a plus, but it seems to be a Shield is going to be the preferred choice.

Thanks everyone!
Jeff

A P239 is a school bus compared to a shield. Not sure why you would even compare the two. The P239 is very close to the size of a lot of double stack 9mms on the market.

I'm a member of Mystic Valley Gun Club, small indoor pistol range.
I'm around pretty much every weeknight. Most Sundays as well but I'd need to double check if you were thinking a specific date.
I'm not sure if I'll be around this weekend though.

Let me know when/if you wanted to make the drive and we can work something out.

I don't agree. I got away from all my double stacks (female, small hands) and the 239 is great for me. I have not shot the shield so I can't compare but the Sig is my EDC.

Numbers don't lie. Take a ruler/tape measure. Take a Glock 19. Take a P239. You'd be surprised at the results. The G19 isn't that much bigger, and holds almost twice the amount of ammunition.

I know this because the P239 was one of the first guns I bought. I carried it for a year or so. It's a nice gun, don't get me wrong, but it is NOT size efficient for its capacity... just like everything else Sig makes. Yeah, the grip frame is pretty small, but I have "girl hands" (or at least, I only ever have met women shooters that have hands that are as small as mine) and I can still run most doublestacks without much trouble.

I would say, get the shield with the APEX kit and then use the rest of the savings to get a Crimson Trace!! Having a laser on a carry piece is an absolute must IMO.

That is the reason why I asked my question. I am only comparing from what I have read on each respective web site. In my opinion from reading the specs it didn't seem like much of a difference. Thank you for your input though...

The Apex kit is what I have in my M&P 40 now. It was also brought to my attention to have the trigger job done at Business End Customs by Lou. I'm not sure what the difference would be though. I will have to look at lasers from CT to see what they offer for a Shield. Great idea for a smaller carry piece, thanks for your input.

I think the difference between the APEX kit and Lou is, Lou keeps it all original where you're replacing parts with the APEX kit.
Lou also only charges $50 for the Shield trigger job.

Is it on the approved rosters list in MA? I appreciate the offer actually and would not mind. I live in Acushnet which is right next door to New Bedford. Where are you located?

Thanks!
Jeff

It's not on the list yet. I'm in Hanson about 30 minutes north of you. I'm down in your area occasionally though. PM maybe we can meet up at the range one day
