Need some assistance.

Sig P229 fails to stay in slide lock after last round is fired in each mag. Happens in all 3 mags. Weapon and mags were purchased NIB in 99 estimated 4-5 thousand through the pipe. Mag springs and mag guides replaced and problem still exists.

Any thoughts?

I would suggest maybe your thumb is hitting the slide release lever after you shoot, happens to me a lot with my 226. Try shooting one handed and see if you get the same result.

If you insert an empty mag into your gun with the slide closed and then cycle the slide by hand, does the slide lock engage?

This. I find that this only ever happens when shooting my SIG. I just have to think about it more.

first, it's the slide catch (or stop). the lock is the part you flip (unlock) to remove the slide

aside from operator error, how does that slide stop look? worn maybe? it might just need replacing or maybe even cleaning if it's not moving fast enough.

post a photo of it

does it work if you cycle the slide by hand with an empty mag? if so it might just be gummed up

Insert an empty mag and rack the slide. If it locks back, then you problem maybe ammo. A light load may not drive the slide sufficiently to the rear to get full engagement of the slide stop. Insufficient lube and a dirty gun could also contribute to the problem. A lighter recoil spring is a possible solution.

I took my P229 out to range today. Just took it apart to clean it and decided to observe the process of how the slide catch engages the slide to hold it open.

If you take the slide off the frame you can insert an empty magazine into the magazine well and watch how it happens. There is a cut-out portion in the mag follower that, after the last round is fired and the slide comes back full travel, will catch a protrusion in the slide catch and push it up to lock the slide in the open position. This supports the theory of a weak magazine spring. It's hard to believe that all three would go at the same time but I guess it's possible. The only way I can think of to test this is to get a new magazine or a used and proven one and test fire your pistol to see what happens. Alternatively you can find someone with a P229 and have them test your mags in their gun.

If the first fails and the second works, worn slide catch spring or a dirty gun (debris around the slide catch) would I think be the next possibility.

Good luck. If the zombies attack soon you want your gun to work properly. [wink]

Thank David and yes you are correct it's the slide catch not the lock. It's worn. I can clearly see that it is. What threw me off was it did engage the slide stop cycling with all 3 empty mags by hand.

You can actually replace it without any tools. There are plenty of instructions online on how to dissemble the 226/9s but you don't even need to remove the grips. I would replace the slide catch spring too just for the heck of it.

question for you: when you load do you depress the slide catch or do you do the sling shot method of pulling the slide back and letting it go? I think depressing the slide catch wears it faster.
