I have been trying to like the Sig P229 but I feel like the grip/backstrap are too small and I do not have a good grip on the gun. It does not come to the bottom of my hand when drawn.

Anyone else feel this way? Do you know of any grips that change or lengthen the the backstrap?

Thanks

When I had the 229 the first 2 things I did were to get the factory standard trigger (for some reason the MA ones then shipped with the short trigger) and hogue grips with finger grooves. I've decent size hands and never had a problem with the 229...

You must have pretty big hands.

How's the 226 feel to you?

Every time I stuff it into my IWB holster it doesn't seem too small.

The Hogue finger notch grips might be a little bigger, but not much. Try the 226.

The other gun I liked when I was buying mine was the Beretta 92fs but my GF found it a bit large for her hands. Im not sure I agree with that perception, but maybe check it out.

You must have the hands of a gorilla. HK made a handgun JUST for you, it's called a USP full size. You can thank me later.

Holy cow, I didn't think it was possible for a classic 229 to feel small in your hands. You must have large hands indeed.

The only thing I can suggest is Hogue rubber grips, or wood grips. Both add extra girth to the grip.

Thanks for all the input. I guess I never thought about having big hands, oh well.

Ditto the big hands speculation. I find my P229 to be a handful, so to speak. I love it, don't get me wrong, but the more I shoot it, the more I feel like it's a full size gun masquerading as a large compact. The grips, while not too large in my hand, are certainly at the large end of the spectrum.

Are you referring to the P229R (which is the most common) or the new P229 E2? The E2 is the "ergonomic" version which has a reduced circumference grip. Sig released this version recently(last year or so) to allow shooters with normal to smaller sized hands to comfortably shoot it.

People's hands are all different. And there are tons of choices in handguns, some of them made for people with big mitts and long fingers. I would also suggest:

Glock 20/21
Desert Eagle (lol j/k)
USP Tactical
STI/SVI double stack 1911
CZ97B Beautiful gun, hard to find
Smith 4506
The FN Pistols are pretty big, hard to find in MA
Colt Combat Elite 10mm

The biggest problem with the P228 and P229 for huge handed people is that they can crush the meat of their pinky finger between the mag and the mag well during a reload. It makes doing speed reloads difficult because the person has to move their pinky finger away from the grip while reloading in order to avoid this.

Ouch! The first and last time that happened is still too fresh in my mind:(
