I am looking to get a yugo SKS paratrooper carbine, but it needs the gas tube/handguard replaced. I was going to get the tapco gas tube and innards to replace it, BUT, since this is a carbine, is there a difference in size between the standard gas tube and the carbine one? I don't own a standard SKS but from pictures it looks like the barrel is longer, but the gas tube assembly is the same.

If anyone can shed some light I would appreciate it!

I don't know the answer but one thing to keep in mind is that the gas tube on the standard yugo SKS is shorter because of the grenade launcher apparatus. You should not be freaked if someone says that the carbine one is the same length if the carbine doesn't have the grenade launcher. Just a possibility, but again, I don't know the actual answer to your question.

There is no such thing as a Yugo SKS Paratrooper. Are you sure its not a Chinese model?

FWIW, Yugo SKS rifles have the worst reputation for gas tube problems. This is mainly due to the corrosive ammo that was used and the soldiers not cleaning their rifles, thus leaving the residue to corrode pistons and gas tube ends.

Where there Yugo SKS'es that were made without grenade launchers and the associated launcher sights? This one does not have that. I have attached a picture to make it easier...I just want to make sure that a tapco gas tube and the associated internal hardware will fit....this SKS is smaller than what I have seen.

Its an M59 Yugo. I'm not 100% sure of the dimensions but a Tapco model should fit. You can find out by sending Tapco an e mail or giving them a call.
Just be sure to check the gas block for signs of corrosion on the outer ring.

Milsurps 4 Me - Thanks for the info. I double checked and it IS a Chinese model. That being said, would the tapco still fit? I thought it was a yugo, upon further inspection it said "Made in China". So I assume its a paratrooper model?

You can get away with a standard Norinco/Chinese gas tube because the only difference is a shorter barrel on the paratrooper. I'm pretty sure the only difference in gas tubes is the Yugo 59/66 because of the gas shut off.

I still say best thing is to call or e mail TAPCO and double check. They know SKS rifles and their products and supposedly have great customer service.

Edit note: It is a Chinese paratrooper. After looking closer at the picture, I can see the length difference from the muzzle and gas block. I'm guessing the reason you are missing the gas tube is because someone didn't know how to swap out the Chinese wooden handguard and add the synthetic version that should have come with the stock.
You can still find Chinese stocks on E Bay and probably a gas tube with wood hardware to boot for cheap money. Any Norinco stock will fit that rifle. You'll just have to either make sure you get one with a short bayonet slot if you want to return it to original and use the short spike rather than the standard long spike model the Norincos usually come with.
