hey im new hear really like the form. I just have a quick question i have and F.I.D card and i was wondering if i can buy a SKS rifle. thanks

What is a fixed mag version.

A standard SKS is semi-automatic and has a fixed/hinged 10 round magazine which is loaded from the top of the rifle either by manually inserting the ammunition one round at a time or with a 10-round stripper clip.

I heard you can put thirdround clips in but you have to take some gun parts of. is that true.

With a FID, you are limited to 10 rounds or less.

You can't use high cap magazines with an FID so none of these for you.

If you get an SKS it has to stay in the original format like the one in my avatar, or you can use a 10 round detachable magazine only. Trust me though... you want the original box magazine that belongs in the rifle. It'll function like it was meant to.

What he said. Ray is the resident SKS expert!

I was in the same boat a year ago and couldn't be happier that my first gun was an SKS. I got mine at Manchester Firing Line, as they had the best prices and I could select which one I wanted of a dozen or two.

Thanks for the info guys. Just one more question. the one im looking at holds a 10 round box. But it is called the Norinco sks rilfe and i heard it can hold up to 30 rounds. Is that with taking the gun apart then putting the clip in thanks.

The Norinco "type 56" is fixed 10 round mag. To accept 30 rnd mags they would have to be the "duckbill" as shown by sksray or......a SKS "D" or "M" which accepts standard AK 47 mags. The M's and D's are much harder to find.
You should not have to take the gun apart to install a magazine unless it's the initial removal of the fixed box to be able to use duckbills. The first temptation when you buy your first SKS is to yank out the fixed box and make it like an AK. Resist the temtation. The fixed is much better. They are what they are. IMHO if you want to shoot 30 rnd mags go to an AK.

Oh Mass.... As stated no duckbills. Sorry I can't get past the crap you guys can't have.

It'd help if you give specific details about what you want, who has it for sale, etc. I'll even tell you if you're getting screwed price wise.

For what its worth, Norinco SKS types are the most widely imported SKS rifle and are usually refered to as Norincos just because they are of Chinese origin regardless of arsenal production and importer info. There are so many different types of Chinese origin SKS rifles that I'm still making a mere dent in collecting them. Chances are its a standard SKS you're looking at and the seller could be pushing the high capacity ability as a sell factor to a newbie.

As far as taking the gun apart and putting the "clip" in... you're on your own. You've been warned of the Massachusetts state laws in previous replies. I'm done here unless you want some history info on these rifles and in that case I'll be glad to give you some links that can keep you reading and learning for hours. Other than that, you should really do some reading regarding FID cards and the limitations along with Massachusetts gun laws.

You can pop your cherry here: http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/forums/81-Massachusetts-Laws

Just don't blame me if these scare you into not sleeping tonight.

the one im looking at holds a 10 round box.

If it is a FIXED 10 round mag, you are fine. If it is removable, put it back and get one with the FIXED (Non removable ) mag. It will be cheaper and keep you out of trouble.

Option 2: Get an M1 Garand

I know you guys dont think i know what im talking about but i do know about guns. I hunted my hole life with my dad and my uncle. I got my F.I.D card when i was 15 years old. I got my first gun when i was 16. I just call them my guns because i pay for them and my dad does the paper work till im 18 he legale owns my guns. He will sign them over to me then. My dad knows about guns to, he and my uncle have there class A sence they where 21 and now there 48. I have a Ruger m77 in 243, a stoeger condor in 12ga, and a mossberg 500 in 12ga. If i get a SKS rifle i will have my dad hold it till im 21 and get my class A licence. I can still fire it at the range and that i want to do with it. not being rude about it but Im not getting mad but you guys all think i just like guns and i dont know what im talking about and you guys dont even know me. Thanks

You won't go wrong with an SKS. They're relatively affordable, relatively plentiful, and fun to shoot. Get a Chinese, a Yugo ... whatever you can lay hands on. Get some stripper clips and blaze away.

If I knew back in the day what I know now, I'd have an SKS in every flavor.

Joey I did not say you didnt know anything about guns You asked if you could buy an SKS and I noticed you said you were 17 in another post. The legal age to buy a long gun is 18. I dont live in Mass so I asked about the age to get an FID card.

I have a Yugoslavian SKS that I bought a few years ago in un-issued condition. Since then, I've completely modified it and it runs flawlessly. The only issue I had was to make sure everything was compliant when I was done. If it's not in original configuration, you'll end up needing to replace quite a bit of stuff. Great firearm!

I forgot to add. If you keep the fixed mag, which works great, get some stripper clips. They make reloaded a breeze.
