The sling swivel stud on my muzzleloader ripped out of the forend of a laminated stock. I was going to drill a new hole to put the sling stud back in but was wondering on advice to fix the remaining hole. Wood putty, epoxy, something else?

JB Weld solves everything...

Spoken like a certified JB welder....[wink]

Hardwood dowel - pretty and functional repair

Move the swivel, leave the hole - ugly and functional repair.

JB Weld - very ugly and functional repair.

Is there room to install the machine screw style swivel instead of screwing the old one in? Might be tougher to pull the nut through the stock than the threads out. Of course, if the manufacturer drilled too big a hole for the original that might explain your swivel pulling out. Laminate is usually pretty tough.

I guess I'm with JonJ - I'd epoxy in a piece of dowel, and then put the old swivel back into that - probably with more epoxy. The swivel should cover up some of the dowel, and be the best looking when you're done.

I like the the dowel idea, Thanks. Are there any worries about the epoxy/dowel pulling out of the the old hole? Will the jagged edges will give it enough grip?

I cant believe I'm entertaining this thought but.... If I put JB Weld into the existing hole and then sunk the sling stud into the still soft JB Weld would I be able to cut/sand/clean up any goofs?

Well, yes, it would. I'd clean up the JB before it completely hardens, after it's hard it will be like working metal. If your laminate stock is grey/black, the JB would blend well.
