Last weekend I bought a S&W 41 at the Wilmington show. It is a gorgeous pistol that shoots way better than I do.

So I'm at the range yesterday and I notice the rear sight looks a bit funny. I touch it and it moves. Then I find it is loose and comes out completely.

When i look at it I'm not sure how to reattach it. There are screws on there for adjusting for wind and elevation, but I'm not sure if one of the screws will also tighten the sight back into the frame. Or maybe it is not supposed to come off at all and I need to send it back to S&W.

Has anyone dealt with this?

Thanks,

Rich

Is it the long (7" or so) or short (5") barrel? On the long barrel, the sight attaches with a horizontal pin. The short barrel uses a dovetail with a set screw on the right side. The windage and elevation screws are not involved in mounting the sight to the barrel extension in either case. All that applies to my 41, which is of early 80s vintage - I don't know if there have been changes over the years.

It is the 5" barrel with the dovetail. So there is a set screw on there? I'll have to look more closely.

Thanks,

Rich

On mine, there is a very small set screw on the right side of the sight mechanism. If you look down on the sight from the top you should be able to see it clearly - assuming the design on yours is the same as mine, that is.

That happened on my seven inch barreled 41 . Since I have a red dot on it, I didn't replace it. Still, let us know how you fixed it as I'll eventually have to repair mine.

As others have mentioned

On the top of the sight you should see a large slotted screw in the center. This will be the Elevation adjusting screw and will have an arrow and UP stamped on it .
On the top of the sight to the right side (of the Elevation screw) there is a smaller recessed set screw. This is the screw that locks the sight into a the dovetail. It uses an allen wrench .050" SAE. Add a small drop of Blue LockTite to prevent it from loosening in the future.
