I found some time this weekend to make a pocket holster for my new LCR.
I started with a piece that was an inside pocket on an old briefcase:
Here's a knife holster that I made for my Enzo Trapper out of this same bag. It's rustic in spots, but it does the trick:
I finally invested in some proper leather tools. This Sewing Awl was $5.99 at Harbor Freight and worked perfectly once the needles were sharpened.
Here is the result: I used some of my favorite pants pockets to make a pattern for the holster, so the curved angle of the holster will let gravity pull it down to the bottom of the pocket. I found that most of my pants have curved pockets, and most of my hiking gear has flat pockets, so I "hybritized" the angle to work in both cuts of pockets.
The only downside to the holster is that it is not "sticky" enough in the pocket, ie if I go to draw, the holster sometimes wants to come out with the LCR. I may either sew some sticky shelf material onto it, or roughen it up to make it almost a suede texture. I'll have to experiment first.
Total cost about $5.99 plus shop materials. I didn't puncture myself once, which is a huge bonus and a first! It took about an hour to sew. If I had to start from scratch, and didn't have the briefcase pocket, I'm guessing that it would take about two hours to sew.
