Hi all, I'm looking for a nice indoor range to go shoot at that isn't a club. I don't drink and I've never been the type of guy that hangs out clubs (not that there's anything wrong with either I'm just not a very social person), so I'm trying to find a place close to home that I can pay for a membership and go practice. I shoot at the American Firearms School since it's near my office and if there was something like that around the south shore it would be great. Anyone have any tips? Marshfield, Kingston, Duxbury, Plymouth areas would all work. Thanks in advance!

Try Braintree rifle and pistol. I belong I go shoot and leave nobody bothers me. No drinking allowed. You will get the occasional small talk but it's all friendly in my experience.

Very few clubs have bars in them. Most have hardly a person there except during events. Most clubs nobody bothers you while you are shooting. Check some out before condemning them all.

Although I've never been to clubs down your way, there are clubs in Hanson, Plymouth, Pembroke, etc.

Thanks! I'll check them out. It sounds like that's probably what I'm looking for and not far away at all.

I'm really not condemning any of them. I grew up going to local fish and game clubs, but I'm just looking for something different for myself. One thing that turned me off from Plymouth was the need to go to meetings, put in hours at the club (even though very minimal), and having to be accepted by the board to get in. That type of thing just isn't my cup of tea, but I'm sure it's still an awesome place to go to. I was going to join Marshfield, but their indoor range has too many rules. The two that turn me off are more than 5 rounds in a firearm & no jacketed bullets. That doesn't allow me to practice with my carry piece with the rounds I carry in it. And, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there is an issue with those rules. I've been to their indoor range and it's fairly small so I completely understand why both rules are in place. I guess the big thing for me is that I would like to practice with my carry piece more than anything, and not so much marksmanship target style shooting.

I hate to be the one to pop your bubble, but you're going to run into this problem a lot. The majority of the indoor club ranges in MA are unusable for typical defensive pistol practice because of the rules in place, or the facilities are just plain inadequate. (Many have ancient/cheap bullet traps that won't do anything but low velocity lead, etc, or others have inadequate ventilation). This isn't a total knock against those ranges, they clearly serve a need for many, many shooters. I'm sure you can find something suitable, but it is going to be tough. This is why I end up shooting outside 95% of the time unless it is bitter, bitter cold out. The other 5% I end up making the trek to pay ranges.

You're not poppiing my bubble at all, that's exactly why I asked the question here...they are hard to find in MA. I mostly go to AFS in North Attleboro because it's by my office, but I just thought it would be nice to not have to drive so far on the weekends.

I've been a member of Marshfield for 5 years of so.

Cons: No jacketed ammo inside
5 round limit
No close range shooting (outside you have to shoot to at 25yards, inside 50')
No steel targets (which sucks outside)

Positives: Gorgeous well maintained grounds
Very rarely crowded at all, even on ideal days there is often no one at the range
Very friendly, "non-clubby" environment
200yard range
Great little, well stocked pond

The Ames Rifle and Pistol Club in North Easton also sounds like it might fit what you're looking for. There's an indoor range that you can shoot pistols up to .45 caliber and rifles up to .22 LR (rimfire only). The ammo for the pistols can be jacketed, hollow-point, etc., but you have to shoot at 50 feet. There are three outdoor ranges...300-yard, 100-yard, and a pistol range with steel targets. On the other two outdoor ranges, there are target stands as close as 15 feet, then all the way out to 100 and 300 yards. There's usually not a lot of people there, but with four different ranges to shoot on, you have a lot of choices.
