SPRINGFIELD – Police confiscated 10 guns and arrested a 25-year-old man following a joint investigation into firearms trafficking.
Alidaud Whitehead, of Jonesboro, Georgia, was arrested Wednesday and charged with trafficking in 10 or more firearms, 10 counts of carrying a firearm and ammunition without a license, two counts of carrying a loaded firearm without a license, four counts of possession of a high capacity magazine, carrying a dangerous weapon with an active warrant and on an arrest warrant for failure to attend jury duty, said Ryan Walsh, police spokesman.
The Springfield Police Narcotics Bureau under the direction of Capt. Brian Keenan working with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives under Special Agent Kelly D. Brady had been investigating Whitehead for several months on possible firearms trafficking, after local police recovered several illegally-possessed guns from Georgia, he said.
At about 5:40 p.m., Whitehead was apprehended on Lyman Street and police seized 10 guns in his backpack, including four that contained high-capacity magazines. Amtrack Police assisted in the arrest, which took place on Lyman Street on railroad property, Walsh said.
“This investigation exemplifies ATF’s mission to work with our state and local partners to combat the illegal trafficking of firearms, which in the wrong hands, could be used in crimes of violence against our citizens or law enforcement officers,” Brady said.
“This was excellent work by our narcotics detectives working with our Federal partner in the ATF. The investigation was in-depth and this will hopefully slow the flow of illegal firearms across state lines into our city. We have seized more than 200 guns this year in our city and this type of local-federal collaboration will hopefully lead to this individual being held,” said Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood.
In the past year Springfield Police have seized a total of 274 firearms, including the 10 in Wednesday’s arrest. This is the highest number of guns seized in a single year since at least 2015.
