I've done the searches, tried to make sense of whats ok and what is not, but I'm still a little confused (not surprisingly)[thinking]

Would anyone be nice enough to tell me if the Stag Arms 4L is MA compliant or not?
I'm not sure if there is a "pre-ban" and a "post-ban" model or what, I give up.
Suppose I could call Stag themselves, if they would answer the phone.[rolleyes]

thanks for any help from a "lefty"

For an AR it's pretty easy really. Since it will have a pistol grip and a magazine that protrudes from under the action (or whatever the wording is) then you only have to ensure (3) things. The rifle cannot have any of the following:
1) A collapsable/foldable stock
2) A bayonet lug
3) A flash hider (however attached) or a removable brake (if you have a muzzle device it cannot be a flash hider and must be permanently attached.

Let's go through the model you list:
1) A2 stock - good to go!
2) Bayo lug - Has it... therefore you can't own this as configured. The bayonet lug is the bump protruding from the bottom right side of the front sight shown here:

3) muzzle device - doesn't say, which means it's flash hider... therefore you can't own this as configured.

Contact JDL Sales (member here). He'll get one and modify it for you to be ban compliant (he is a Stag dealer).

thanks Matt, too bad there was one on AR15.com that I wanted. [crying]

Oh well, I appreciate your info, guess I'll just keep my DPMS southpaw for now...

thanks again man

Seconded! He did mine (I've got the 2H - I think) upper. The right handed flat-top M4 style. He ground the offending lug off and replaced the evil flash hider with a pure and true compensator for a very, very, very reasonable amount of cash. He did a few more tricky thing for me to the point where I had a slightly custom Stag for about the same as I'd pay for a Bushie off the shelf from FS.

Thanks again both of you. Youz guys have been very helpful
So, (stupid question #3), how can I get ahold of JDL?
Yep, I'm pretty new to this forum[thinking]

Hey, the world needs more EBR's! Buy one, then go Green and bring it to one of the shoots & show it off!

Nah, John and another dealer said they can't do it, can't bring in a serialized firearm that is non compliant.
Spoke with John at JDL sales, and boy, is he nice.
He spoke with me about what he could do, uppers, etc...and was very generous of his time.

thanks for the lead with JDL, that in itself was valuable.

hmmm... that's interesting. I thought that as long as they didn't transfer it to you as an AW (e.g. modifying it before the transfer) all would be ok. Sorry for the bum lead.

Just a suggestion - and I'm sure John's already made the same suggestion - but if you order the upper and lower seperatly through John he should be able to make the modifications to build the gun you want. Actually he'd be selling you an upper and a lower which you would then assemble to create the actual gun. Since the mods would have been made before the 'gun' itself was built it should be legal.

IANAL and YMMV but I'm 99% sure that's how he made mine.

I believe that you can order ban compliant direct from Stag, the only problem now is the wait is about 18 weeks +. When I bought my Stag upper, it was ordered ban compliant which was an extra $10. This probably doesn't help you much as you said you it was for sale somewhere else, but might be helpful in the future.

Eh, I'll just keep my DPMS southpaw for now.
If I could find a stripped upper receiver without a fixed handle, I'd be OK.
I just hate that A2 style fixed handle, can't do too much with it in terms of optics clearly.

Is this correct? Why can't a Mass FFL dealer buy it? He could be selling it to someone outside of Mass. Is this law different than handguns which may not be "Mass Compliant"?

The other option is to have the seller break down the upper and ship directly to you, where you could either modify it or bring to someone to do. And then have the lower shipped direct to an FFL where you could pick it up.

Well, I dk, only that Jon said the firearm would basically have to be broken up to bring it into the state, ie buy the upper then the lower etc..
ZHA said no-go as well.
