Stupid question, but one I don't know the answer to...AR-15 Carbine

I understand that a carbine is a "shortened" rifle. I am looking to get a Daniel Defense Omega free-float handguard for my M&P15 MOE. Is the M&P15 MOE considered a carbine? This seems like a dumb question, but I can't find a solid answer.

The MOE is a carbine. It has a 16" barrel with a carbine length gas system. You shouldn't have a problem with the Omega rail you linked.

No, it doesn't go by the barrel length. It goes by the length of the gas system, carbine, mid, and rifle. Most commonly found 16" barrels have a carbine gas system. This LINK may help you out.

Bushmaster makes a dissipator barrel thats 16'' long , but I believe uses a full length gas system , basically a 16" barrel with a extended sight

No. The dissipator actually uses a shaved gas block underneath handguards and a full FSB up front for the handguards to lock into.
