I own a few 22s and am now looking for something with some more power but still affordable to dump rounds through. Will only be used for target shooting, no hunting, and most likely <200 yards. Was thinking something in 7.62x39 as I hear its cheap, but I'm not seeing many options... VZ-58, SKS, Mini-30? No AK-47 in CT so that's out.

Anything else I should consider? Is 223 fairly cheap to make an AR-15 a top choice?

Not exactly a target gun or cheap but 762x39 plarform cheapest you might find is a sks.
you could also look for bolt action rifles...I seen a few mausers converted to 762x39 on gun broker over the summer...
My friend has a Remington 799 mini Mauser and its pretty darn accurate even with cheap steel cased ammo. With hand loaded ammo and ascope hes under 2 moa shooting prone with a sling. CZ also makes a x39 bolt gun.

I don't think I can have this in CT since it looks like it has interchangeable AK parts... Looks nice though. How's the accuracy?

I just purchased an IZ-132 (hunting rifle variant of AK platform) 7.62x39 from Brian at B&K Sales in Natick, MA. It's a great platform.

I'm just looking for something that won't break the bank to shoot... 30 cents or lower a round would be preferred... Not limited to only a $100 on a gun, though.

No, but you aren't looking to spend the money for a good target gun. Considering the goal, it will certainly work.

Mosin's are entertaining, but the cost to shoot is sharply dependent on whether or not where you shoot allows the use of the milsup ammo (some clubs don't allow steel core/steel jacket ammo).

Mosin is fun and in terms of cheap ammo, second only to a .22LR.

But if you can spend a little more on the gun and want fairly cheap ammo, it's hard to argue against an AR platform. S&W M&P 15 Sport is about $650 in Mass - don't know about where you are. Rounds are under $.40 for the most part.

what don said, either a ruger american, a savage axis, marlin xl-7, used rem 700 in .223. 223 is honestly a blast to shoot and you can find good deals on ammo if you know where to look!

take into account available (in your area) ammo. not just the gun. some guns can be had cheap but ammo could kill all the savings on the firearm.

also what are you looking to get out of your gun usage-vise? how much is the budget? generally what has been suggested is all good for the most part.

since you are in CT you can get surplus 5.45 ammo online and had it delivered. it's corrosive but at the cost of 13-15 cents a round it is only one real rifle cartridge that you can get this cheap.

BTW AFAIK saigas are OK in CT. I have people from CT purchasing my retainers for conversion all the time

Ok based on your ammo budget. And need for accuracy. By something in 223/556 and reloading set up for 223. Your reloads for under. 25 cents per round should be better than any of the steal cased fodder

Isn't most cheap Mosin ammo corrosive? Meaning you have to clean the gun even if you only fired 5 shots?

The surplus comm bloc stuff should be assumed to be corrosive, as should any military surplus ammo you don't know with absolute certainty isn't corrosive. About the only old milsurp stuff I trust is Greek HXP, and even then I get a little unnerved when I don't clean my Garand. They do make modern commercial 7.62x54R; I saw some made by Remington the last time I went to Bass Pro, though it would be more expensive than what the OP wants to spend. Cleaning with ammonia is recommended after shooting surplus ammo.

There's a reason the ammo is so cheap, and there aren't many more options at < $.30/round. If the OP is looking for cheap ways to shoot, he's likely going to sacrifice in some other way. With a Mosin, it's cleaning. Still, that would be my recommendation. They also make a bunch of mods that you can use to make your Mosin into a nice target gun without permantly altering it.
Isn't that what windex is for?
Hell, I just started buying straight ammonia by the gallon. So much cheaper.

Obie

I just shot my Springfield Special from the cmp for the first time.
I used 30 yr old lake city stuff. I'm assuming I am safe withthat.

I just picked up 400 rounds of the Greek stiff from the CMP. Are you saying I should scrub it out with ammonia after using the Greek?

I'm also guessing that Butches bore shine is not the most economical way to go.

No. My point was that I'm just so cautious that any old milsurp ammo might be corrosive that, even while I know definatively that the HXP is non-corrosive, I still feel the urge to clean my 30-06 milsurps out of the utmost abundance of caution.

Also, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a good Hoppes #9 scubbing will do the job. I use the ammonia at the range when I'm done shooting. On a hot, humid summer day--or putting away a warm gun in a case--corrosion can start on your way home from shooting.
