SW 686 with 4" Ported Barrel

I have a 586 with a 6" barrel which was ported by Magnaport. The cuts are on top, just behind & on either side of the front sight.
Full load 357's become hot 38's.......it's awesome!

I cant believe that I cant find a pic of the SW 686 factory ported barrel on the internet. Its just strange!

Magnaports' work is awsome. What is the average turn-around time from them?

when I had mine done turn around was 8 weeks but that may vary with the work load and if its around hunting season which IIRC is when I sent my pistol in. Generally the shorter the barrel the greater the recoil reduction. My pistol is a 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk. Magnaport does a very nice action job as well.

Factory ported barrel has, in the past, been one port on the top of he barrel in front of the sight.

It is known as the 686PP-(Power Port) Here is the link to the web site

686PP

As far as Magnaport, I have a 340PD that is ported. There are some great benefits to a ported barrel that the uninformed and inexperienced will never know [wink]

I bought a 4 inch 657 41 mag that was one of a limited run back in 86. I then sent it out and had it magna ported.

It really made a difference in recoil control but now 22 years later the damage that the magna porting has done to the pistol is clearly visibile.

The escaping gas from the ports has melted a little of the rib on the top of barrel.

I own a 686 Powerport Smith and I love it. The powerport is different than the magnaports which run in line with the barrel.

If you look at the photo of the 686PP on the Smith website, you will notice that the partridge front site sits back off the muzzle by about a quarter of an inch. This is because the powerport runs across the top of the barrel in front of the site.

I really like the powerported 686. Though I haven't tested a non-powerported version side by side, I do notice less muzzle flip and faster followup shots with my 686PP. This could be a function of just being used to my particlar 686, but it sure seems to jump around less than other .357s I've tried.

The only problem with the port is that it takes a little extra elbow grease to clean. Junk really loves to collect in there.

Got any pics of the damage you can share?
