I just got a new PT1911 - am taking it to the range Monday - got a question on the Slide Stop function. I'm new to guns in general (although have some experience with firearms being on the rifle team at school (years ago)) - anyway, when i have an empty Colt 1911 (its old - made in 1918) and empty mag inserted and pull the slide back to inspect the chamber, i have to manually push up the Colt Slide Stop to hold it open.

But, when doing the same with the new Taurus PT1911 it automatically stops and holds the action open, and further, it will NOT release the slide unless i pop the empty mag out - then it will release if i push down on the Slide Stop lever - is this Normal?

Not sure if that is normal for the older Colt, but for modern 1911s the slide staying open after the last round is normal. What isn't normal is that you have to pull the mag to close the slide. Even with an empty mag, you should still be able to close the slide via the slide release lever. It may be tougher to do so, but it should still close.

thanks for info - i striped it, cleaned & oiled, reassembled and seems tight but at least now it will close, must be just new and needs some working... have not made it to the range yet,but will thurdsay and we'll see...

It is the follower in the magazine that pushes the slide stop up from the inside when the magazine is empty to lock the slide back. So the Taurus is working fine. The old Colt either has an old mag in it that doesn't have a follower or spring pressure sufficient to activate the slide stop, or that slide stop in the old Colt is worn or altered so it doesn't get pushed up. Common simple stuff.

With the slide back, insert an empty mag to see how the slide stop and follower interact.

with my unfired S&W1911, an empty magazine in, its harder to push down to release the slide stop than if there was no magazine.

That is because with the mag in there, when you press down on the slide stop you are also pressing down the mag follower that is being held up by the mag spring.

Take slide off, put the slide stop in, and see what an empty mag does to the slide stop when inserted.

I think mine's broken

50 rds down range OK...

no problems with the Taurus - 50 rounds outdoors (5 to 10 degrees cold), also put 3 mags thru the Colt (old timer, 1918) - and had at least one jam/mag... (extracted OK - but then failed to clear eject port cleanly) - so, the Colt will be seeing the gunsmith shop this week.

anyway, thanks all for your insights!!!

Hows your taurus holding up? I got a hundred rounds through mine and it isn't accurate one bit. It shoots down and to the left by about a foot. The slide to frame fit sucks, the ambi saftey fell off and the barrel bushing is loose as a goose on the barrel. I called them yesterday explaining the problem to them, theire customer support was great. They told me to box it up and send it in. Fedex came to my house today to pick it up, Taurus even paid for overnight shipping. So far, so good, we will see in a couple of days what they say. As for you technical people, the barrel OD is .575 and the barrel bushing ID is .584. I could litterally feel the barrel moving around inside the bushing.

Taurus 1911

I hope you have better luck with your PT1911 than me. After one week my ambi safety fell off. After sending it in to Taurus I have been playing the waiting game. It has been more than 2 months and still no gun back. If you call them they are not helpful at all. Their customer service is like a bad joke. Good luck trying to customize your PT1911 too. I was looking to put an adjustable rear site but Taurus has their own dovetail cut into the slide and nothing will fit it. The main reason I got the Taurus is because the Springfield Mil-Specs were on backorder. Well here I am two months later and no gun. Already found someone to buy the PT1911 then I off to order a Springfield where I know I will at least get good customer service.
