What can people tell me about 454 Casull revolvers? My father-in-law is suddenly taken with this cartridge and has his eye on a Taurus Raging Bull with the 61/2 inch barrel. He like the ribbed barrel for some reason.

I'm pretty ignorant on the subject. Fill me in.

It's similar to a S&W 460 but without the capability to fire the largest cartridge in the line.

Kittery has teh ruger alaskan in 454 cassull.....think it was $850 or something close to that. 454 cassull has the ability to also fire the 45 colt so has a little bit of flexibility.

I shot a boar with a 4 3/4" freedom Arms .454. Using Freedom Arms 265 gr. jacketed lead flat nose factory ammo( back when they made it) the heart looked like it had been put in a blender. It may not be the largest handgun bullet out there, but how does one dispute the effectiveness of the results of this bullet. No comment on the Taurus .454, but the bullet is very effective.

I never met a Taurus I didn't hate. I would tell hime to buy any other brand.

This.

And this.

Knowing full well what they say about opinions, I have had/seen nothing but bad things from Taurus firearms (even revolvers). I have no experience with the Raging Bull, but I'd go S&W or Ruger all day long anyway.

This is pretty much what I expected to hear. It is very much in my best interest for my FIL to NOT make a gun purchase he's going to regret.

I've pretty much steered him to the S&W 460 line. The only problem there is barrel choice. He's like something 6-7" and the 460 comes in 5" or 8.38".

I once had a chance to buy one, the cylinder didn't lock up enough for my tastes. YMMV, but if I was holding 60k CUP I would want lockup like a bank vault.

My $.02 is to go with the SW 460.

I've got the 460 Performance Center 12" version w/ picatinny rail on top. Shoots 45LC, 454, and 460 mag. Nice piece of S&W big bore. I have zero experience with Taurus to compare.

I have the S&W 460 XVR in 8 3/8" barrel. I have shot the .454 and the .460 and they both have a lot of kick but the gun has a compensator so the recoil isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Honestly I don't think the two cartridges have that much of a noticeable difference in recoil. It comes with a compensator for lead nose and a different one for jacketed. I think the barrel it self is only 8" long and the comp adds the 3/8".

What is he going to do with the gun?

Because Taurus usually sucks, he's probably a lot better off looking at a Ruger chambered in the same caliber, I can't imagine it's much more money either, and there's no doubt in my mind that the Ruger would be a better quality revolver.

Hot .454 Casull loads are effing snappy as hell though. I find things like .500 S&W generally easier to shoot, even with relatively hot loads worked up.

That's a really good question. I think he wants it for the same reason that caused him in his 70s to finally buy that Corvette he always wanted and didn't get because he had to raise a family. He's just wants to explore his inner recoil junkie.

Have him watch this for some eye candy! Oh and the novice shoioting the 44 mag while iraqvet8888 was cocking the revolver for him is now haeing a little trouble with his right ear! :) Whaaaaaat?

Anyway this was a fun video to watch with some realy cool and powerful revolvers. Never knew a .500 linebaugh maximum even existed.....thought there was only the 475 linebaugh! Even more interesting was there wasn't even a s and w 500 or a 454 cassul in the "pack" of most powerful handguns they reviewed!!!!!!

I have had a raging bull .454 for maybe 15 years now, never a lick of trouble with it. Handy for cutting down trees!

Epilogue

So the father-in-law opted for the S&W 460 XVR in 8 3/8" barrel after holding a couple different ones in the shop. His new found toy and an assortment of ammo are now on its way to NC where I'll meet up with them in August. This should be fun!!!!!!

if its your dad, get him a pair of uncle mikes shooting gloves, the ones with a little gel inside. He will thank you later

Update

Whoa Betty!

Mrs. Dragger and I got to try the beast yesterday at the Unaka Rod and Gun Club in Tennessee. Tried a round of 45 Colt first, a 454 Casull (wow), and then the 460 (hold on!). Man that was a log of fun. the 460 is an impressive gun and the two big rounds are the 'E' ticket ride of handguns. Start shooting that at the range and everyone else stops.

The 460 is a big heap of fun. Hornady SST 200GR in 460-PC 12" below:

I have a sudden hankering for a Raging Bull 454 2.5 inch barrel. I would be willing to bet the recoil is a mother. Anyone have one of these and cares to comment? I could go for a 44mag in the same size (assuming they make a 44mag this size)
