Teach me about 357 revolvers

My wife and I drop the Hopkinton steels pretty consistently in DA at 25 feet using her 3" GP100 without a rear sight (only has a groove in the top of the frame). Sure, a longer barrel and sight radius is inherently more accurate at distance, but 3" is just fine at handgun distances IMHO.

ETA my wife fires .357 from this "short" barrel without complaints. If it doesn't bother her vagina, it shouldn't bother yours. ;-)

I have an N frame S&W, Model 28 Highway Patrolman. Wonderful firearm to shoot, and the recoil is very manageable. Try to buy a S&W made prior to the idiotic key locks becoming standard.

ditto rep308
smith or ruger

love my model 65, and my bisley blackhawk

and love the Rover avatar from the Prisoner. one of the best things ever on tv

Love my GP100. Cheaper than a similar Smith and Ruger's customer service is unbeatable. Absolutely no regrets buying that gun.

I've been thinking about getting a smaller revolver for carry to go along with the bigger GP100. I really like the 640 pro series with night sights, but damn they're expensive and hard to find. May just have to settle for a SP101.

And you would not be "setteling" in my opinion. Have had an sp101 on my hip for over two years now........I feel very confidant loaded with 5 each 158 grain hornadys. I shoot about twice a month.......minimum of 50 rounds of 158 grain 357 magnums minimum every time I go.......and I feel it will last many many many years to come. Accurate.....dependable......simple......and I actually think it is an attractive fire arm.

The sights easy to use on the sp101? I'm use to the nice fiber optic sights on my GP100. Also did you get a trigger job on yours? Do you have the hammerless model?

I shot the LCR a couple times and couldn't hit crap at 10 yards, granted I only shot 5 rounds but I definitely needed more practive with the front ramp sight.

I can hit an 8" steel plate easily at like 20yards, I've hit it at 50 yards on occasion. I have the stock trigger and hammerless. Takes a bit of practice with the ramp sight and dao trigger. I have shot it enough and I know where the trigger breaks and have a steady hold. As Whacko said, The thing is built like a tank too and I don't see it breaking anytime soon.

Nice. I'll have to keep my eyes out for a sp101.

You can always buy the fiber optic or xs big dot front sight for it as well, and seems pretty easy to install.

If you can find one get at 686 SSR. You see one listed or in the stores every so often. It's from S&W pro series and is well worth the price.

The sites are little better than the ones on a j frame or LCR.......but they are definately NOT the sites you find on a full size revolver. Took me about 100 rounds to firugre them out. The SP101 is definately a self defense fire arm........I'd say 15 yards max. That said I with practice I can put all 5 rounds on an standard size piece of paper at 10 yards.....very quickly...and that is good enough for self defense in my book. Its not something you are going to compete in pin shoots with that is for sure......save the GP100 for that.

I have the hammerless version snub..........I bought it purely for CCW work and if that is the purpose of the gun the hammer just gets in the way. I did not get a trigger job.......I dry fired the shit out of it when I first got it and it improved quickly. As the trigger moves rearward I can feel two disttinct "clicks"......as the pawl grabs and as the cylinder locks......I have learned to use that as an advantage.........I have trained myself to stop just at the second click and know the hammer is going to fall with the slightes move after that. I can do this quite quickly! It is a gun you need to put a couple hundred rounds through to get really confidant with......but that is part of the fun is it not?

Oh nice. Yeah I do the same thing with my GP100, wait for the distinct clicks. I've got plenty of ammo to practice with if I do eventually get a sp101.

You guys have the hogue grips or the factory grips?

Seems like the going price on GB for a hammerless sp101 is about $540-$550?

Hogue grips definately. Wow price has increased......I got mine 2 years ago for $430! It just followed me home [smile]

Wow I guess so. Well according the Four Seasons website, they sell the models with the hammer for $479.99 plus tax.

I paid like $530 for my 6" GP100 at Four Season 3 years ago, so they're not much less money than my GP100. Damn. I'll keep my eyes out for one.

The chiappa rhino also looks sweet, but i cant buy one ssince I dont live in the USA ( I live in MA)

If you want some SERIOUS style go with a Colt Python …..of course you will suffer a major hit on your wallet but these things are gorgeous. images.jpg

Don't have too much experience with short barrel revolvers other than the LCR and are great carry guns but I'm not sure how often you'll shoot .357 loads through it at the range.

For the LCR, that would be exactly once. Ouch.

I have a 686-1 with an 8 3/8" barrel...love it! I can pick off milk jugs at 100 yards SA. Someday I would like another 686 with a 4" barrel.

Now, I know people don't seem to like the company for whatever reason, but the Taurus 65 and 66 are both excellent revolvers.

I don't own a handgun more accurate than my Taurus 66, 4".
