I need your advice. I want to purchase a Glock that will be softer on the recoil as compared with a 23 (for instructing women shooters).

I like the idea of a 34 as a full sized service pistol. Would a 17 be better?

I carry and train with a 23 so maybe I should get a 19?

What do you think?

I would reccommend the 19.

A Glock 19 was my first gun and is still my CCW. Fits my hand, easily concealable, holds 15 rounds and the recoil allows a quick follow up shot.

If it has to be a Glock, the wife likes my 17 the most -- especially after I put in the 3.5# connector. She likes the full size colt the most because even though it's a 45, it recoils less then any of the Glocks.

I'd say the 19 since I assume you are in MA, for the sole reason of allowing yourself to double your preban magazine market since hi cap mags from the 19 and 17 will both fit. just my two cents.

I am somewhat leaning towards to 34. I like the idea of getting something different. Something for fun at 100 yards.

Whatever I get I will not be carring it or using it for home defence. It will just be a training gun for new students.

More women that I take enjoy shooting the 19 because of it's size and comfort.

They don't want to shoot "big" guns and the 19 seems small enough (visibly) and it's not too snappy for them even though the 17 or 34 would be less so.

Sounds like you've got two conflicting priorities there.

1. Something different/fun at 100 yards.
2. Something to start women shooters on.

I don't think those two will give you the same gun [smile]

The G34 may satisfy #1. But maybe/probably not #2.

I've taken girls shooting... and half of them like the more compact size of my 26 and 19... but some have liked the larger "more solid feeling" 34 or my other 1911's or Sigs.

It's hard to generalize what women prefer just as much as it's impossible to generalize what men will like to shoot. Based on this alone, I'll have to suggest the 19 as it's right in the middle. Not too small... not too big... and recoil isn't much at all. Hell... look for a 19C. It has the recoil of a .22. They're out there... I found one.

On the other hand...If you're an instructor... who will be doing a lot of teaching... buy all of them... and let the women try them all to see what they like. [smile]

I know that my goals are somewhat conflicting. I am only using the "women" as an excuse to buy another Glock (it is not just women...I spend a great amount of time working with students on how to properly hold a handgun...but even still...some men are afraid of the 23).

And since I exclusively train with a 23 I am thinking I might like to go with a Glock that is very different.

Since I asked the question I have been leaning towards the 34. All of your input has been very helpful.

I've found the subcompact Glocks' recoil to be less than their full-sized counterparts - at least in .45 and 10mm.

Thanks for all the help on this.

I decided to go with a olive drab 19.

Here was my reasoning...

I was afraid I might like to shoot the 34 too much...the problem is that this goes against my philosophy of always training with my carry gun (don't want to make the 23 jealous [smile]).

I also figured that the 19 would make a good alternate carry gun if my 23 was ever disabled. With the 19 I would not need any additional holsters or carry gear.

Thanks again for the help.
