I currently own a M&P .40 FS with Dan Burwell match trigger work. Also a .357sig barrel with it. This is my primary range and game gun.

New EDC is a Hk45c to replace a P2000sk. Next summer will be PPS or PM9 for EDC with the Hk45c.

But now I want to get a 9mm. Purpose of this will be range and game for myself, wife and kids. It might also mean the retirement from .40 and consolidate on 9&45

My main choices are M&P 9 FS; G17 or G19 (3rd of 4th gen?); HkP30; XDm (modded mags)

Anyone with kids that have trained them up on any of these? I think that will be the determining factor. Size for their hands; trigger reach; racking slide; controls.

Thanks for your input.....

I'd also consider a CZ75B. Hard to get in MA sometimes, but one of my all time favorites. Sig 226 is another of my favs.

I have both and also live in metrowest if you're interested in trying those.

Best,

Rich

Haven't trained kids, but the replaceable backstrap on the M&P might help. If it's also for game use, you might want to try and score an M&P 9L or Pro. That's what I use for IDPA/USPSA/multigun.

I've always found Glock mags more of a pain to load than others. I know my kids struggled with them. YMMV.

I started out hating polymer, striker-fired guns, and now love my M&P 9mm purely because of results.

The M&P in the 3, 4 or 5 inch model is a fine gun, and would be my choice for a "production" 9mm, period.

M&P 9mm FS is an awesome pistol, I had one for a while and was very pleased. I now have a G19, but only because I carry and I want hi-cap mags. For you, just using the pistol at the range, the M&P would be a great choice, plus with the rebates and mag deals you will get a good value.

Did you think about a 9mm conversion barrel.

^ storm lake [smile]

^ this too. my M&P9 will never leave my collection, even though i have a G17 and G19. it just has it's own niche.

Get prebans and don't have them load them all the way up. The UpLula probably helps, too.

No kids but my fiancee's hands are small and she can comfortably shoot my M&P9. I really need to get a trigger job done on it :(

I'm thinking about an M&P 9 FS for a range gun. Hopefully won't have to buy it (come on #144 on Thanksgiving Day). I've shot my friends M&P9c and it is really comfortable and sooo soft shooting compared to my PM9 and G36. I think it's almost as soft shooting as another friends Sig P226. I didn't find the trigger to be bad on it like most say but it's certainly not as smooth as the Sig or Kahr. I can only imagine the full size M&P will a joy to shoot for long stints at time.

Good luck with your decision.

Glock 19, followed by the Sig Sauer P239 for second choice. P239 is an awesome little compact pistol with very low felt recoil. I really wish I didn't have to sell mine a while back. Although, it is a tad more complicated for a beginner being DA/SA with a decocker.

Glock 19... well because... it's the best. [wink]

As much as I love my Colt 1911 I've been giving some serious thought to a G-17.
The .45's are a bit much for my son and given the cost of ammo these days I figgure I'll be able to shoot a lot more.

Beretta 92F & Glock 17 come to mind. I finally got around to shooting the 92F and it wasn't too think for my hands (not that I have small hands, but in the past I couldn't get use to the double stacked mags and always strayed away from them). The 92F feels like it is the lightest recoiling of the 9 mm's that I have ever shot (not sure if the Hogue finger groove grips made that much of a difference or not), but it is definitely smoother than the G17 and a Keltec P-11.

In regard to loading the magazines - one of those Maglula UpLULA universal loaders: works great on 9 mm - 45 acp. Well worth the $34 and just tie a long cord to it so you won't lose/forget it at the range.

I've owned Glock & S&W in 9mm. I can tell you from my own experiance that the Ruger SR9c is something you should check out. It is now my everyday carry.

in the near future, i will only have 9mm pistols except for my 1911.

same reasons as anyone else... i plan to set up to reload 9mm and .223 / 5.56 only. that would leave .22LR and 45acp to "buy" at the store.

after dabbling with the .40, .357sig, 38spl and .380's, i decided to do what i'm doing... plus it's easier to keep the ammo can / mags packed for the range / SHTF too [laugh]

I'm doing the same thing, Chet. I'm gonna sign up for the reloading class with E.C. and stick with two cal's (9mm, 5.56). I'm drowning in .22LR for the 10/22...so I'm good on that end.

Glock 17,/19/34.... Sig XFive Allaround, P226, P228... Beretta 92/F/FS/M9A1... M+P 9mm (with appropriate trigger repairs)... Kahr K9/P9/etc... S+W Pro 9mm 1911.... outside of that, with a few exceptions, most of the rest of the choices out there are just "meh".
