Who's got a tommy gun? Been thinking about getting one but they're a bit pricy around $1000-$1200. What do you guys think? Worth the dough? Any home defense practicality or just range fun?

Thanks!

In that price range I take it that you mean the semi-automatic version. I have held and fired an actual M1A1 and it was a blast, but I doubt it would be good as a home defense gun unless you were facing down a mob of zombies outside your door. I have handled some semi-automatic versions and found them to be pretty heavy and more awkward than a regular rifle. Based on this (admittedly limited) exposure I could not recommend them as anything more than a fun gun.

I have the opportunity to fire a select fire Tommy Gun... The guy my wife works for (company owner) has a machine gun license... He's a military collector and has a WWII vintage 1928A1... When the weather gets better I'm gonna get trigger time... I'll be super happy... Sparky's Gun Shop in Webster MA had one on the wall (been a while since I was in there).. Really heavy thing...

You can find them used for less than 1K. We use them in our American Zootshooter matches:

My dad has one and it's pretty badass. It's super heavy and doesn't have great iron sights.
Go with the shorter barrel. I wish he did

Fun but expensive shooter

I'm pretty sure my dad never had one, but he says he has a shoulder holster for one in storage.

I have a 1927a1, it's a blast to shoot. As far as Home defense, seems to me it would be pretty formidable. A 30 round mag, shorter than a AR, 45acp, point and shoot. It's not like you'll be shooting 100yds in your house.... [grin] Who needs a 15rd preban glock.. with a 1927a1 [grin]

oh ya.... notice the gun leaning up against the wall in my avatar and the 50rd drum on the table...

I would rate this gun as fun range gun. I got a chance to squeeze a mag at the range. It's a hoot to shoot. Recoil is minimal. With a violin carrying case, you look like a gangster. [laugh][laugh]

I shot one of these matches with them last year and it was a blast. My first time shooting one of them and I loved it. No recoil, a little heavy, but it's not like I'm carrying one on a ruck march! If I had the cash, I'd get one in a heartbeat. I'm saving to get the SBR version.

If he decides that he wants to sell it, let me know. I'll definitely take it!

Personally, I don't see the point to the semi-auto versions. They're heavy and awkward and not that much fun. Real ones are a blast though.

Great for plinking the 230 grain bullet really causes some devastation. Trigger pull is ridiculously heavy. Semi auto design is prone to firing pin breakage.

Really? The one I have experience with as a pin that's stamped from at least 1/8" steel and is at least 1/4" top to bottom, with a dimple on the end that's the "pin". Looking at it, it looks like it would be pretty hard to break.

The G-man with the '03 Springfield is a salute to Melvin Purvis. As head of the FBI office in Chicago, he helped take down a number of the motorized bandits of the time. Apparently he was not a fan of the Tommy Gun and felt that the agents that carried them relied on "spray and pray" too much. He was an accomplished pistol and rifle marksman and prefered to use a hunting rifle or an '03 Springfield (he had been in the Service during WWI) when on a raid.

This thread makes me green with envy. If I had my choice of a FA toy, it would be a Thompson.

Jack,

The way I have been shooting the last few years I doubt that I would reach 10,000 rounds in the lifetime.

Barring a Zombie Apocalypse that is.

Frosty

After about 10,000 rounds you lose interest. I bring one to the NES shoots for the folks to play with. Jack.
