Trouble re-assembling my MkIII (big surprise!)

Aside from working on the fire-control components, I fail to see a valid reason to take your Mk3 apart. I just hose mine down with CLP and boresnake it occasionally and it works fine. Now that you've had yours apart once, Mike....I suspect you'll want to do the same [laugh]

Now strip it and re assemble it 4 or 5 times in a row. Then get the volquartsin sear and trigger and your trigger pull will drop by half. Change it to a MKII hammer bushing and get rid of the mag disconect at the same time. I did the same things to mine and it's like a different gun now.

You need to become one with the gun! [banghead]

OK, I got an idea... a bit off topic, but can we get a head count for how many Ruger Mark owners we have on board.. just a thought. I am sure many are following this. Maybe I can start a seperate thread.. I just bought 2 Mark III's this weekend. I shot 60 rounds at lunch time with the one I picked up saturday then the wife and I went back up tonite after work and ran another 300 rds thru it along with about 200 rounds through her MP15-22 and another 60 rounds through my CCW MP40c... now that's what I'm talkin.. [grin]

My ruger MKIII Hunter Space Gun:

All Volquarsten internals, grip and comp.

I don't take it down anymore. I boresnake and spray it out...I swear it works better dirty anyways.

This thread inspired me to finally take mine apart and clean it, after about 500 rounds through it. I definitely could not have done it without the videos, but now that I understand the internals, it should be easier in the future. I had to use a rubber mallet a couple of times.

The biggest secret of all: get that hole on the receiver / grip perfectly lined up before you put the bolt back in. To make sure it's aligned, test it out with the big pin on the mainspring housing (without the bolt installed) and make sure it slides in. This check makes the final step of getting the hammer strut into place much easier because you don't have to force the mainspring housing up into place.

You are probably right. I've taken mine all the way down several times now. Not because it's needed, just because I want to stay sharp. One of those times was to replace the sear w/ a Volquartsen of course. Last time I cleaned it I decided to remove the extactor assembly. There was so much crud built up in that area that I think I'll do that every 1000 rounds or so from now on.

By the way tiktock that gun is sweeeeet-looking.

Will brake cleaner hurt the bluing on the gun?

I hope not, I just used up a can of it last nite on my Mark III hunter, but then it is SS. After that I cleaned my new Blued model 36 with Brakeclean... no problems here.. I am careful though, take the grips off, spray it, blow it with compressed air then I spray it all down and wipe clean with CLP..

Does this forum still let you do polls?

I've already given up on the idea. It's like the second time I asked a simple question, figured someone would respond..... it's ok.. I found the Ruger board so far, thought maybe we might have a little sharing experience here....

I live in Arlington and am willing to help anyone take apart /put back together their mkiii. Just let me know ...

Once I had done it once, I immediately did it a few more times, just to be sure it wasn't luck.

These are great guns, and taking them apart is a little bit of a pain, but not terrible. Just stay calm, find your inner chee, have another drink, look on youtube, and ask for help in need be!

Some great tips here. Just wrestled with mine for several hours over a few days, had to walk away before brute force was used and finally got it together.

A couple of key points that helped me:
Once you seat the barrel install them main spring without the bolt. If it pops in you know the barrel is properly seated and is not the cause of your grief. Next, with the bolt in, put in the magazine and pull the trigger while pushing the hammer all the way forward, I used a bobby pin to move it. Finally, I still could not get the main spring all the way in. While pushing on it I pulled the bolt back partially and let it drop a few times and all of a sudden it popped into place. Point it up and latch down the main spring. Haven't fired it yet but it seems to cycle OK but feels tighter than before.

I know that gun scrubber (which is just about brake cleaner) won't hurt an MKII. Just take the grips off and blast the hell out of it.

Thanks, maybe I'll grab some of that. Not opposed to field stripping and cleaning, but I'm also lazy [laugh]
