Universal M1 carbine

Question for you all. My local gun store has a universal M1 carbine for sale with 4 mags for $800. Should I get it? I've been on the fence with it because it looks to me to be a 3rd gen universal M1 carbine. Should I go for it or should I stay far away?

Thtat's a lot of money for a copy, that didn't always have a good reputation.

The only M1 Carbines I would consider would be a military contract one, or a Fulton Armory. Heard too many horror stories about the post-war civilian remakes

That's exactly my concern. Is it even worth the gamble to put that money towards it that might have issues or not

I would try to save up $300 or $400 more and find a real one. A military contract one will also appreciate in value.

You can probably find an import stamped Inland for just $200 more. If you look at Gunbroker completed auctions, you will see them. Other manufacturers will generally be more, but if you just want a shooter go with an Inland that’s been stamped.

I remember when they (and Winchester 94s) were $79. Too much then.

I wish I could haggle with the shop owner on this one to get it down to $500 but it's a consignment gun unfortunately

It’s worth a try. All they can say is no. When Riley’s started doing consignments they’d call the owner.

I had one. Well my dad had one. He got it at Woolworth’s for $75 in the 1980s.
Fun gun. I’d love to get a 30 carbine again. Wouldn’t get a universal though. The parts are not mil spec. Ours had a rear sight go missing and it was a bitch to find a replacement.

I just used the search feaure on the listing for the upcoming Amoskeag Auction in Manchester, NH. I see 19 U.S. M1 Carbines listed!
4 Winchester, 6 Inland, Rockola, Nat'l Postal meter, Standard products, Quality hardware and one Auto-Ordnance. ( That one has a folding paratrooper stock. )

I had an IBM M1 a long time ago. Fun gun.

But, to me, without that whole “history behind the gun” aspect to these. They really miss the mark… and are really expensive to feed.

Yeah. I recall 20-25 years ago when you couldn't GIVE away a used 94 in Thuhty-thuhty for $400. Every gun shop had 3-4 of them. Same era, every gun shop had $400-500 Auto 5's in various configurations. "Those guns suck!"

Of course, AK mags were $6 ea - and this was DURING THE NATIONWIDE AWB!
