Just purchased a wasr 10 on tax free weekend. Took it to the range and noticed a few problems that I was curious to see if I could get some help/advice.

First problem I had was I had cosmoline shooting out of my barrel. I assume this may be due to the fact that I did not clean the weapon well enough. I do not see any leftover cosmoline after I finished cleaning it the first time. Are there any areas I should look in particular?
The last problem i had was smoke coming from the handguard as well as the handguard becoming extremely hot to touch. I am not sure if anyone else has run into this problem and found any solutions.

As always thank your for the help in advance.

all is normal spray brake clean down the barrel it will eat the cosmoline out do not get it on the wood , strip and clean the bolt with the brake clean also .
The handguards will get hot with some serious shooting and the smoke is just more cosmoline buring out of the wood

I think i found the source of the evil packing grease the bolt. every time i chamber a round i see cosmoline go into the barrel. i tried to remove the pins from the bolt to clean them, but they are stuck. Any ideas on what will loosen it up?

If I remember correctly, you need to remove the pins in a specific order....one pin is notched and wont come out till the other pin is removed. Search youtube there are videos.

I would just soak the entire thing in brake cleaner overnight and blow it out with a compressor. Make sure the firing pin rattles around loose inside. Apply lube to the sliding parts when you are done.

Took the gun apart again and soaked all the parts in hops 9 for 24 hours.scrubbed it all down and put the gun back together. When i racked the bolt and examined down the chamber there was causmaline on the breach of the barrel. Any ideas where it is coming front?..

You'll probably find that stuff coming out of the WASR for a while. I bought a used WASR 10 a while back and I still find stuff coming from crevices every now and then. A little of it shouldn't affect the performance of the gun. I would just try to wipe off what you can get to. Use a little bit of WD-40 to help break the drier stuff loose and you should be good.

clean it really well.

take all the wood off the gun and than hit it with a few cans of brake cleaner, scrub it, wipe it all done and lube that thing back up and you're good to go

Cosmoline is not a problem, but a bonus that come with the rifle. Either shoot more and wipe off the excess cosmoline with tower or clean it throughly with WD40/brake cleaner.

Smoke is good. Smoke mean you are having fun with the rifle. Heat is normal when you repeating pulling the trigger (while aiming). If it's really heat up, wear a shooting glove. Enjoy the rifle.

none of the things you listed were problems.

if it operated fine then you are good to go.

if you are worried about oil/comso dripping out from under the pressed parts on the barrel, pump a few hundred more through it and it'll eventually free itself from the gun. That smoke? That's the cosmo gloriously burning off of your awesome rifle.

If an AR-15 started smoking, you'd immediately drop it as it's telling you it's about to grenade like a POS. Your AK is just stretching it's legs and getting into the rhythm of awesome.

Non-chlorinated brake cleaner = Good. [grin]
WD-40 = BAD! [sad]

Water Displacement formula 40 is just that, if the rifle gets wet, feel free to spray some on to displace the water before using proper cleaners and lubricants. Other than that, do not let WD-40 near your firearms. Once the carrier evaporates, the gunk that is left will gum up everything it touches.
I have seen lots of semi-auto firearms malfunction and found out from the owner that WD-40 was mistakenly used in place of a cleaner/lubricant. It is neither.

Enjoy the WASR. I like mine but need to shoot it more.

WD-40 actually dissolves cosmoline extremely effectively.

I get this part.

I don't get this part. Is WD 40 bad or good?

From the past, using WD-40 to clean out access cosmoline work for me. Using brake-cleaner also work too. I preference to use WD-40 over brake-cleaner because WD-40 take a longer time to evaporate. The extra time allows me to detail scrubbing gun parts with brush.

All is good. Shoot the hell out if it. And buy lots of ammo and 40 round mags.

I've used WD-40 for cleaning my firearms for a couple years now and have had no issues. It should definitely NOT be used as a lubricant but I find it makes a great all purpose cleaner that won't damage finishes. I simply spray down whatever I am cleaning, give it a good wipe down to remove any excess and lubricate with a good lubricant where needed. I have had no operating issues or rust problems on any of my guns.

If you go thru 3 or 4 20-30 round mags quickly, the wood on the top of the handguard will smoke profusely and upon removal, you will see the underside charred. This happens all the time.

I've never seen one burst into flame yet, but there's still hope!
