I have a lo-cap WASR that I want to convert to hi-cap, but I don't want to do it myself. Are there any recommended gunsmiths or anything out there that perform this?

If I lost function of my hands and needed a guy to do work to an AKM, I would go with this guy:

Sergey Lyalko of rustbluing.com. Lives in Natick. Evidently he's worked on stuff in the Russian Army. I don't think you'll find anyone better in MA to work on it.

The "trade up" advice given by TYPE01313 is probably the best idea to do, but I'd first look around at current prices of WASRs to get a better idea of what you'll be trading into. As of late, I haven't seen any reasonably priced WASRs in the state of Massachusetts. People are gouging the shit out of the platform.

Millers Falls Gun shack has hicap WASRS coming in 499 with one preban hicap. Borderline gouging, I guess... but lately that's the going rate in MA for 30 rounders.

I went on ZHA website and they have quite a few WASR listed. Anyone know offhand what theyr'e going for? Maybe i'll call later.

If I do this conversion how do I know I'll be 922r compliant. It already has a Tapco G2 trigger and the Tapco black pistol grip. So I think 4 other parts need to be U.S. made right? Will any other parts have a US mark on them?

It's quite possible that your rifle is already 922r compliant. If it's a Century Arms WASR, it's got the following: tapco trigger group, US pistol grip, US gas piston, and possibly the muzzle brake, or if it's "ban compliant" a welded on muzzle nut. They should have "US" somewhere on them.

I am not sure if the ugly ass pine wood on WASRs are US made or not. My guess is that they might be.

I'm not sure if this is the ugly ass pine, but here's my WASR. This was when I first got it a few years ago when I had an FID, I've since polished the bolt carrier and put a finish on the wood.

Get a Dremel, a carbide metal cutting bit, a small square file and get to work.

FWIW... do you at least have a high cap license?

check the muzzle nut and gas piston. I am not sure that low cap semi auto rifles are made 922r compliant or what, but my guess is that Century makes them compliant. It looks just like their other high cap WASRs, and Century has to make them compliant- there are a lot of ATF eyes on their company due to their volume of importing and sales. That pistol is US made. The wood looks romanian, but if the front grip was modified by Century Arms (it looks like a romanian 'pistol grip' foregrip cut down), it's by definition US made.

I am willing to bet that you're fine as far as 922r goes. I wouldn't worry about it.
