Our friend called last night to tell us 500 head of elk are down in their fields, so it is go time in the morning. Seven of us met up to thin the heard, get some meat and push them off their property. Well, the plan came together. I think I have about 60 pounds of backstraps and tenderloin already packed away in the shed. We have another two friends coming later to grab some quarters since they were not successful this year. Some I will process for our friend's neighbor who let us shoot a couple of the elk on her property that abuts. She will get a bunch of burgers meat and individually packed backstrap. Good day and rounds out our meat needs for the year.

Any pics of the herd? Glad to hear the American West is still alive. This is the kind of story you hear about in books.

So, I see you're a leg man :D My club has a game dinner every year and last year a member brought Elk sliders. Nice little burgers, very lean, one of my favorite dishes there. I try to guard against envy but you make it so hard. Nice hunt.

what are you using?
Tikka t3x lite. Vx5 leupold cds scope with a fire dot reticle. Has a limbsaver recoil pad. Soft shooting and just plain accurate. Never upgraded the stock. I just like it light weight and the fact I can nab it around on the rocks. I did recently add one of these so I can easily use a bipod or tripod.......

Got them all hanging. Not sure what good it will do since it was minus 9 this morning. These things are freakin' elk Popsicles right now.

Backstraps, tenderloins and hearts are in great shape. Put them in a cooler and they didn't freeze.

Supposed to get into the forties this week so that will be perfect.

It will take them a week to thaw to butcher at 40. When we used to kill deer in January, Id run small space heater in my garage just to keep it above freezing so they wouldn't turn to popsicles. Once that happens its tough.
