What would you buy if you wanted a .22 rifle and were willing to spend $300?

I'm looking to pick up an entry level rifle to make the switch from exclusively handguns. If you had $300, what would you buy?

A new Ruger 10/22? Something used with a scope?

I'd appreciate advice.

Thanks,
BigKat

10/22 for $189 at Dicks, and spend the rest on mags and ammo
Yes!

For an extra $80, send the factory barrel out for accurizing. Drop it back in the factory stock with a bedding pad and have a serious good shooter. You're still under $300.

Why yes, I am a recent convert to the cult of the 10/22... why do you ask? [rofl]

I just bought a 10/22 ruger. Nice gun fun to shoot. My 12 year old son fired it at the club last week, 1st time with a gun.

10/22 and turn it into a Liberty Training Rifle - instructions here. That'll just about take up your $300 and give you a nice basic rifle... with all the screwups that Ruger puts into it removed (crappy sights, crappy trigger, crappy bolt release and crappy mag release).

Thats what I would do.

You can look into the Marlin 795 as well. They're a bit cheaper and sound like good rifles (I have yet to own or shoot one). You can get tech sights for them too.

+10 for for a Ruger 10/22.
You can also send it to Randy at CPC (http://www.ct-precision.com/) and he will turn the trigger into a fabulous ~2 lb trigger, polish and jewel it, square to barrel, auto bolt release, trigger overtravel screw etc.
all for $189 - he is in CT so nice and close.
I have one done by him, and probably 10 shooters in our club as well - all satisfied customers. He is a vendor on rimfirecentral.com if you want to check on his feedback.

I also like the Henry and the CZ. Ruger is a BMW, Big money waster. You can also find a used Mossberg M44 for under $200.00 if you look.

for a bit more than $300, a CZ 452 for a bolt action.

The CZ 452 Standard is the same as a 452 Lux but has a beech vs walnut stock.

When I bought mine about 8 years ago it set me back $239 NIB. I bet you can still find them for $300 or so.

IMO, if you have $300 for a rimfire rifle, buy used quality before buying some cheap tin popper like a 10/22.

You pick up a CZ 452 or Ruger 77/22 and you think "quality". You pick up a 10/22 and you think "toy".

I bought a used Weatherby Mark XXll, with scope and swivel mounts for $180.

This was one of the Beretta made guns from the 1980's. It was hardly shot at all. It's got the rich Weatherby stock and bluing, and it's a dream to shoot.

I find myself agreeing with Josse again, there are some tremendous bargains in the used market.

If you can find a good used 10-22 used you may be able to get one that actually has a metal trigger group part unlike the plastic ones in the rifles that ruger is producing now.

Or you could find the suppliers of parts to build or have a custom built 10-22 from http://www.rimfirecentral.com/ .

I found my 30 round Bingham mags and the conversion adapter there, Those mags haven't been made for many years, And Ciener buying all of them up for his AR15 22LR conversions didn't help finding them.
