Which .40 Compact?

nope, havent shot a kahr .40 but countless other .40's.

I have owned a Sig P239, HK USPc, and Glock 23, all in .40. The Kahr K40 has significantly more felt recoil than any of them. Seriously. It really does. For quite a few years, my carry gun was an aluminum-framed, compact 1911 in .45 ACP. The K40 has a lot more recoil than that small 1911.

Is the PM9 manageable? Yes, of course it is. That's why it is sitting in my pocket as I type this. But it is also a good bit more recoil than a K9, which has practically no recoil.

Trust me on this, I own these guns.

Ok, i get it, you own a lot of guns. [laugh]
Again, i agree that the pm9 is great (in my pocket daily too) but the op asked about .40 and i simply made a suggestion. There are tons of guys who swear by the pm40 and while a .40 that small might not be a fun gun to put 100's of rounds thru at the range, its a great defense pistol.

I was leaning towards the m&p 40c since I will have a 40 for self protection and can swap out the barrel for a stormlake 9 mm for $140 to keep range costs down. I was planning on adding an apex 5 lb trigger instead of the stiff stock one.
You 2 c would be appreciated.

sounds like you have a good plan. the m&p 40c is a great pistol but it definitely needs help in the trigger department. the barrel swap is also a great idea because 9mm is cheaper at the range and not so hard on the hands which can be an issue with the smaller pistols after a long session.
the .40 vs 9mm argument will go on forever. i have both and like both. getting the proper defensive round for carrying is a must with any caliber and i have had great luck with winchester pdx1's in all calibers from 9mm to 12ga. (no feed issues or separation w/ tests and damn impressive results). i carry a pm9 daily because i like to pocket carry it at work but my .40 glock is in my nightstand and would be the 1st thing i'd grab in a bad situation if i have the choice. good luck with the new pistol.
