I would like someone to tell me why someone considered to be an adult(18) by his own government is then told he is not an adult when it comes to buying pistols. I thought I was an adult, why am I teated as a child. I think age restrictions should be all or nothing. If I'm an adult(18) then it's final, I should be able to do anything I want and not have to wait untill 21.[frown]

Tell me if you feel the same way.

you can't legally buy alcohol either. And I agree with you and there a lot of 18 year olds in Iraq carrying automatic firearms....but they can't buy alcohol or a handgun either.

It's hypocrisy at its best.

This isn't 100% true. IIRC in some free states people under 21 can legally
own handguns, but they might not be able to purchase it from an FFL, and
an FFL can't sell them "handgun ammo" or some crap. I know there
are certain exceptions/exemptions to federal law WRT this issue.

The whole thing is bleeping stupid, though. I think the government should
shit or get off the pot about what constitutes being an adult. They should
either make it 21 or eliminate the restrictions to keep it at truly being 18.

You have to take a good look at a given state's laws to see what they do
and do not allow. I would wager a guess with CT requiring permitting for
handguns that they don't allow it for anyone under 21.

In NC according to the NRA's law guide the "mere posession" age for
handguns is 18. You will not be able to carry a pistoi (eg conceal
carry) until you are 21, however. But this would not prohibit you from
owning a handgun, and using it at a range, etc. You'd have to dig further
into the law.

The pain in the ass part is that if you are under 21 your ability to purchase
handguns (and ammo) is extremely limited because you cannot obtain
one from an FFL. (due to overriding federal laws acting on what the dealer
can and cannot do) This means you'd have to acquire one at a private sale (assuming such a notional exists in NC, you'd have to check the laws).

This brings back memories.
For what its worth......
I had my handgun CCW issued in NH a week after I turned 18. I had to wait another three years before I could buy a handgun.

I got my Pistol Permit in MA when I was 16 (Hunting and Target). Of course that was 20 years ago and I found a loophole in the law. I could not buy a Handgun from a dealer, only from a private party. Let me tell you that didn't take long...

Hey thanks

I checked the law books for both states: CT is a definite no(To possessing, or buying)
But in NC it says 18 to buy(private sale), 18 to possess(in home/at range).
Does that mean when I move, if I can find someone selling a pistol (that does not have a FFL) I can buy it?

P.S. How would I transport it home if I can't carry it?

P.P.S. I have so many questions and not many people with answers. More to come[smile]

Yes, assuming that private handgun sales are legal in NC, and you are a legal
resident.

Carry has different meanings... imo in NC's terms it means to carry it on your
person... eg not unloaded and in a locked container or whatnot. EG,
carrying it unloaded in your locked range bag to and from the range is more
than likely legal.

You'd have to see what NC's laws are for the storage and transportation of
firearms. Likely obeying whatever is described in those laws and you will
be fine. It probably is a lot more lenient than MA or CT is.

You might want to see if there is another gun forum specific to NC- they would know the laws there a heck of a lot better than (most of us) would.
Of course as I say this some fellow/lady will come out of the woodwork that
lived in NC and knows more about it. It seems as time goes on this board is
attracting folks from all over, and that is a good thing.

I wouldn't know how to find a NC forum. I am literally band new to this forum game. It's fun so far.

P.S. How do I get it to Say "Originally posted by" before your quotes?

You might want to try someplace like the Gun Control Issues section on
Sigforum. I know they have a pretty diverse set of members and there
are also a lot of CCW instructors on there that deal with the laws
of multiple states.

As far as the quote thing goes I think it is part of the software... if
you push the "QUOTE" button you will note it says something like

" QUOTE=drgrant;somenumber " (brackets removed for clarity)

I can't get it to work. I don't care except I want to say who it's from to new readers of the thread.

But I digress.

Hey,

Another question relating to the first topic:

(BTW I can't find it, but I asked earlier if it was poosible to buy under the age of 21 in NC, then you said)
Yes, assuming that private handgun sales are legal in NC, and you are a legal resident.
Assuming is it possible, and I am "the above" would it be illegal to have someone buy a pistol with the intetion of immideatly selling it to me after the sale?
