Can any one give tell how they load 45.acp 185g SWC with W231 for use any of these Semi's. S&W 1911's 16 & 18 pound springs, Glock 30, Sig P220, 457.

I need the OAL and grs.

I loaded dummy rounds with a AOL of 1.275 which is what their book says and they were to long to chamber in the 457 and 1911's. Hornady told me on the phone, load them to 1.135 but when their seated at that depth they look way to low.

The 185 swc is not one of the most reliable bullets around, its a little too short when loaded. The 200 gr H&G #68 is an excellent lead swc and a better choice. 1.275 is the max OAL. it will not function in some guns. I have good luck with 1.250.

Your right there are better choices these are brutal to try and load. Even at 1.250 I don't like the looks of them. They sit way to low in the case and don't taper crimp well.

I even had trouble trying to get them down to .470 from .473 never mind .469.

If I owned a .45 revolver I would try them but I think I'm looking for trouble using these in a pistol.

The 185 gr swc wasn't intended to be loaded out to an OAL of 1.250. I have some Winchester 185 jacketed swcs that have an OAL of 1.135. These are low velocity target loads designed to be fired in a barrel that has been throated to accept such a round. I think 5.0 grains of WW 231 and an OAL of 1.135 might work.

I have had excellent luck with lead swcs in several Glocks: 21, 22, and 24L. I'm talking 100% reliability.

99% of my problems were in 45ACP, Glock 36 and 21. Might have been the brand, might have been me. They worked well in my 1911's. Just might be a good idea to make some test rounds to ensure reliability.

I don't know the OAL I load to. I generally load SWCs (H&G #68) to the longest OAL allowed by the magazine. 5.1 grains of Titegroup with a Winchester primer gives me 945 FPS. Max load is 5.5 grains for a Hornady FMJ 185 grain wadcutter according to Hogdgon.

This is my IPSC load and I have never had any feeding problems in S&W 1911s.

It has been my experience that feeding problems arise with the 185s as velocity goes up. I would try to stay around 800 fps.

I used H&G #68 lead swcs with an OAL of 1.250 in my 21.
