Judges on a federal appeals court in Richmond pushed back this week against efforts to undo gun regulations in Maryland and beyond, expressing incredulity from the bench at the idea that any firearm in common use cannot be legally banned no matter how dangerous.

“Have you ever fired an M16?” Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III asked an advocate for gun rights groups, who responded that he had not.

“I have,” said Wilkinson, a 1960s Army veteran appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit by President Ronald Reagan. The judge recalled firing an M16 at targets of human silhouettes. “When the bullets stuck the human being, it splintered them into all sorts of different pieces,” he said during marathon oral arguments Wednesday and Thursday in three cases related to state gun laws.

This guy is supposed to be a conservative. He sounds like an idiot.

Splintered into all sorts of pieces 🤣🤣. Is he talking about a bayonet? What an idiot

Did he shoot at targets and see them blow up, or did he shoot at humans? If he shot at humans, shouldn't he be in prison? If targets, then he's talking about wood targets used by the Army in the 1960's. Wood splinters even when you hit it with a 22.

That right there is why .22 needs to be banned. Did you know that the M16 AR15 shoots a .22 caliber bullet?

In fact, you can buy an air rifle that shoots .22 caliber, without any background check.

.17 is the only safe caliber.

Remember that there is a still a large block of "back the blue" sh*thead conservatives and some of them are judges. They actually believe that weapons should be banned and limited to the police. I would expect to see this in the decision when it's rendered, just exactly like the republican judge on the 7th circuit. I know they will use that decision because the judge in the 4th circuit actually referenced this decision during their discussion and the 7th circuit "republican" judge actually referenced it in striking down the IL assault weapons ban. A decision I might add that SCOTUS said not to use because it was deeply flawed.

When it comes to 2A conservatives can be just as bad as the left. It's just a probability game. "Re-elect Trump and we'll get more conservative judges" and then we get more conservative judges and they toss the American people under the bus to protect the authoritarian state.

Well said!

As a reminder, it was Trump who outlawed bump stocks and gave ATF and all future AGs a blueprint of how to take away our 2A rights. Thanks to Trump's legal machinations, ATF went after 80% and AR pistols.

I would be happy to call that guy a f*cking liar right to his face.

Wood can splinter when you scratch it with a fingernail. *rolls eyes*

These are typically referred to as old fashioned law and order conservatives, these types are sometimes even worse than liberals when it comes to 2A.

Perhaps he was a draftee? Their terms of service were two years. January 1968 to December 1969 is two years...

True. But December 1968 to January 1969 is two months. He could have failed basic training and still been truthful.

Did you listen to the guy?
First he wouldn't even be considered conservative in Mass or NY.
Second, he should have retired a decade ago.
