I have a Mossberg MVP Talo in .308 and as part of that package it came with NO sights what so ever. It did have the rail on to top of the receiver but thats it. I have a 4x12 scope on it currently but Id like to put some Iron sights on it for when I am at the local range(100yrd) and up in NH at my buddys place rather than the bulky scope. I assume I can use pretty much any rear sigh for like a AR and such since it can go on the rail but the front of the barrel has no where for a front sight or even a crappy bead. I saw some AR clip on front sights. Does anyone have experience with these? Any recommendations? Id rather not have to drill into the barrel but I will if needed.

Could I use something like this and just line the crosshair etc up with my boresight?: http://www.amazon.com/Phantom-Multi-Reticle-Panorama-Reflex-RT4/dp/B002DR13QI

Heres what I am dealing with:

Go with the red dot.....the time you figure out a clamp on front sight set up you will have a ugly bulky mess up front.

This is the down side to buying a rifle purpose built for optics.

If you do decide to D&T barrel for a front sight there are several rear sights available like the ones Williams offers.

You could do a few things if you really want iron sights.
1. Have a dovetail cut into the front and put in a basic bead sight. Or even adapter for other front sight options. Like a target globe sight.
Something like this. http://www.trackofthewolf.com/List/Item.aspx/875/1
Or http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/873/1/RS-LYMAN-FO-SET

Or you can get a rear sight like the lymen target sight and mount a base on the side of receiver.

Might be in the end cheaper/easier to buy a compact iron sighted rifle.

Well I decided to go with the red dot. Seems like it would be the cheapest and easiest option to achieve my goal. After looking around I decided on this one: https://www.truglo.com/optics-red-d...ot.asp?catid=52E3D7409570433EBF69FA2CBEB51CA6

Mac1911, the rifle is already pretty compact being a scout rifle.

With out sights[wink]
Just go easy on the truglo open red dots. I have them on a few of my pellet guns they don't take kindly to bumps....

This style I,have had on my 870 and a host of other rifles and held up,pretty well. The batteries rotted inside and destroyed it after 3 years of good use. https://www.truglo.com/optics-red-d...ht.asp?catid=52E3D7409570433EBF69FA2CBEB51CA6

I almost went with that one but wanted to keep the size down a bit. Hopefully it doesnt mind the .308 kick.. Waiting on a Lantac Dragon brake to come in too.

Can't say for recoil on the open sight...
The best inexpensive red dot I have is a Tasco Pro Point back in the made in Japan days.

It has been on every thing I could mount it to. Spent the last year on the omega. It's now on top of my AR 22lr set up for my daughter. I think I bought this in 1994? Has taken a beating and holds zero as well as any red dot should.

Well hopefully it will last. If not I got it off Amazon so it can easily be returned. I would really like something a little nicer but I couldnt justify the cost of some of the higher end ones for a limited use rifle.
