Shooting has now become a much more regular activity now that it is a family sport ( with my wife getting her ltc) and I belong to a range I enjoy going to (HSC) but shooting hundreds of rounds of center fire ammo every week through my AR's and C&R guns is not good for the budget!!

My wife and I added a SR-22 (her pistol) a M&P 15-22 ( at her request as well) but I would like a serious target small bore rifle. I have a little bit of experiance with NRA high power and really enjoyed it but schedule wise its not an option right now

I want a smallbore target rifle! But I can't/wont shell out $$$$ for top end German rifles.

I owned a Izhmash cM-2 before things to a terrible turn financially and I had to sell. From what I've seen the SM-2'S are now very hard to find

My budget is $500-600. NO MORE!!!

I'm currently looking at a Remington 513-t and a Marlin 2000 with summer biathlon kit. Any thoughts?

EDIT: I will add that summer biathlon has my curious.... HSC has a program and I have just started running and getting back cycling again ( because Im F'in fat and sick of it!!! )

I have a cz452. With Wolf match ammo, my friend put 4 shots into one cluster at 100 yards. I think it's pretty accurate. I normally keep 5 shot groups under an inch at 100 yards.

I put a trigger kit in and its gtg. Total with the trigger kit is right in your price range.

The Marlin 2000 that I looked at is unsuitable as a smallbore rifle. You might want to look around for older rifles but that price point is kinda low for a serious rifle for smallbore. There is stuff floating around. I'd talk to Mac Tilton and go to the Targettalk forum.

Here is one that's not too bad.

Sent you a PM....

I realize thats a very low price for a target rifle, but I also have two young boys that maybe interested in doing such a sport someday. If its something I get really into Ill upgrade and have a second family rifle.

after reading a few different places briefly I already see some of the error in my logic..... Im expecting to spend a little and get a rifle that might do two things well. Damn it, I hate when I do this! It always ends up expensive

I have a Remington 513 t its a joy to shoot. Big and heavy. Trigger can be funky. Mine was actually fireing at bolt closeing. I replaced all the trigger parts. Its a pretty decent trigger for what it looks like. There's really nothing high tech or really nice about the reciever/ trigger other than they work. With the Olympic sights its really nice to shoot. At 50 yards with the correct front hood and inserts its a joy to tear up the center.
I ended up getting a weaver mount and mounting a 50mm honking hunk of glass on it. Real fun @ 100 yards never tried for groups just shoot at clay targets and spent shotgun shells.
Have you considered a 22 lr for your ar? I don't have a A2 22lr yet. I have the tactical solutions taclite model.....love it. Old tasco reddot and orange burk rats don't stand a chance..I have a thing for mossberg m44s also. Actually I love older 22s.
Here's a few favorites
Tactical solutions 22 lr upper
Remington 513....there are several "target master varients" down side is there getting harder to find good parts for.
Remington 552 speedmaster great little semi
Mossy 44...
Remington 40x. I love this gun but hard to find parts
there's a good amount of older 22s with tons of life left in them. Good luck..your price point is hard for really nice comp rifle. I never competed in small bore. I can tell you though the 513 was 140.00 back in its day new....if it helps any

I have two boys as well. Not sure if the younger one is a righty or not. I'm praying for righty.

I'd get one of the CM2 Cadets and a regular one. If the kids are going to be serious competitors $600 for the rifle is chump change in comparison to gas, entry fees, ammo, shooting jackets.....

My stable of guns is pretty modest but I have the right gear for what I'm doing.

I think you can find a used Anschutz in that price range. It's probably going to be a 64-series, but sometimes you luck out and stumble on a 54. I know of one right now (a 64) in a local shop, with sights, for around 6. What it's going to take is leg work, because decent target rifles are hard to come by on the used market. Try Kittery Trading Post.
The Kimber 82G's that the CMP was selling are solid rifles and can be found online for under $600 usually.

This message board always has target 22's for sale: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=233

seriously consider a mark 2 savage model 93, perhaps a used one. in 22 mag they are very capable, accurate, and affordable. Some of them come with fluted bull barrels, sporter barrels, and the accu-trigger is epic.

Not really what falls under "Smallbore Target Rifle", especially in .22 magnum.
*DRB*, we're talking about a position rifle, correct?

Yes, I had briefly hoped for a small bore that could be converted to a magazine fed to be used for summer biathlon ( the reason why I was looking into the marlin 2000 as it can do both )

No, Im not all that interested in a CZ or Savage. My M&P15-22 serves as a plinker so no need.

For biathlon, you will need a repeater. Loading a single shot takes time and requires some dexterity.

The best value you'll find is the Savage MK II magazine fed target rifle. It had aperture sights that are good enough. The stock on it is horrible, but you can upgrade it later on to a biathlon stock. If you go on GB do a search for Lakefield Biathlon, these are the predecessors to the Savage.

The Marlin biathlon is not a bad rifle, but they are getting scarce.

I'll write more when I get to a computer. But I own a bunch of the Savages, Anschutz 1427s, a Lakefield and will hopefully have 2 Izzy 7-4 model 10s shortly. I also have access to a bunch of other rifles.

I was going to say a Savage in .17 HMR.

Can't use .17 in small bore 3 position matches or biathlon.

It's a PIA to take a modern sporter rifle and use it for matches. They have the wrong sights, you can't use a cuff or sling adequately and the stock is wrong. I've seen people who are otherwise good shots get very frustrated because they get out shot by a very large margin when they use their non target rifles.

Never shot a CZ452 i can safely assume?

Yes, it is indeed a nice rifle. It is NOT a target rifle. You can relax, Im not picking on a CZ or a Savage or a 10/22 ect ect they are all very very nice rifles. But it is like comparing a M&P15 "SPORT" to a Compass Lake or White Oak AR.

That is in NO way an insult to a M&P15 Sport or a Savage MK2 or a CZ..... they are just made for different things

call it what you want. if a rifle double the price of my CZ can shoot better groups, ill eat my hat.

dohhh, love a chalenge! Im not sure what to say....cz vs anchultz in some sort of match???? personally I wouldnt wear my good hat.

And you will be doing 3 position shooting at 50 meters?

Its not always how accurate the rifle itself is, but how the stock/sights/sling configuration all play into allowing the shooter a consistent hold and sight picture in whatever position they are in.
