Advice on a smallbore target rifle UPDATED RANGE REPORT POST #44

Can't use .17 in small bore 3 position matches or biathlon.

It's a PIA to take a modern sporter rifle and use it for matches. They have the wrong sights, you can't use a cuff or sling adequately and the stock is wrong. I've seen people who are otherwise good shots get very frustrated because they get out shot by a very large margin when they use their non target rifles.

I didn't see anything in the first post about "matches". I was thinking for target shooting. I shoot at targets most times I go to the range. This wasn't in the "competition" section.

Guys, I ended up deciding on a two rifle setup. Rifle #1 ended up being a Marlin 2000 as I had originally started thinking about. It ended up being the same price as a CZ or Savage and will at least serve as a starting point for a few different types of shooting sports.

I havent made up my mind on rifle #2 yet, as I want to get some hands on experience 1st before a few thousand dollars is spent on something I know very little ( ok nothing ) about I have a few friends and family that expressed enough interest that a cheaper starter smallbore target rifle seemed logical as it would serve as a dual purpose loaner.

Thanks All!!!

Good choice, make sure you have at least 4 magazines for it as well.

1 of the other people that does biathlon st HSC has one too.

Hope to see you out on course soon.

If you know or hear of anyone selling mags, im buying!!!

It appears that in the mean time I can modify 7 round mags to work, but I would like to have a full setup of proper mags

As far as a target rifle, I don't have enough experience to make a recommendation. WRT the kids, my Remington 597 has been great to me. Replaced the irons with TechSights and the thing is a tack driver with irons. Throw a cheap scope on it and it would be scary good for a semi-auto .22LR. Whole set up would run well less than $250.

Keep saved searches on GB and Ebay for magazines. I've also seen them on marlinowners.com and RFC.

Guess you did not read through the entire OP or missed the biathlon reference.;)

I kind of missed it, but then again wouldn't have known there were limitations to what you could use.

call it what you want. if a rifle double the price of my CZ can shoot better groups, ill eat my hat.

Do you need salt ?

dohhh, love a chalenge! Im not sure what to say....cz vs anchultz in some sort of match???? personally I wouldnt wear my good hat.

50 meter postal match!

Bon appetit

The rifle can. The question is can the shooter?

Didn't we have a sort of challenge on here a while ago? Who was that, and what was the outcome? Sounds like another one is brewing. [pot]

I own both types of rifles we are discussing here; a CZ 455 and an Anschutz 1413 (1972 barrel date). The CZ is a really nice sporter/hunting .22. I'd put it's accuracy up against anything Ruger, Remington, etc. puts out in the sporter line. It will print pretty small groups at 50 yds, but it just isn't in the same league as the Anschutz. My ratty old 1413 which has had untold tens of thousands of rounds through it will still group in about half the size of the CZ at 50 yds.
It's apples and oranges, and unless you've shot a purpose-built target rifle, it's hard to understand.

Dammit now you guys have me trolling the web for a model 54 match or supermatch! I wanted my own the 4yrs I shot in college but couldn't swing the $$ so I used the schools. I went all USPSA when I got back into shooting last year but the lure of the Anschutz is still there; just such a nice rifle and the pinnacle of precision. maybe I'll stop by one of the Thurs night prone matches at Hopkinton and see if that pushes me over the edge [laugh]

Was finally able to go pick up my Marlin 2000 that I got off gunbroker almost a month ago at my FFL ( traveling for work sucks! )

The seller listed in as "like new" and it really was. Original box, instructions, sights, and the summer biathlon kit never opened stilling it's tube. All in all I'm pleased as it seems lime an OK value. My shooting skills on the other hand leave much to be desired!

Made a late night trip to HSC indoor range last night ( at 1am!) To give it a try and try and get the stock adjusted. Shot 50 rounds of Wolf match target sitting using a military web sling ( yes not ideal!) I had mixed results using different sight inserts but I think I found one I'm happy with ( I've always use post inside and aperture, not the circle inside a circle style)

Overall, a fine firearm in the hands of a very much less than fine shooter

Very cool! Get yourself a cuff/sling from Altius or Larson and you'll be doing that prone at 50m!
