Yesterday I was at the range with a buddy of mine and had the pleasure of testing out some of his new toys. Links attached below. One was an HK SP89 and the other was the Desert Tactical bullpup .308 bolt action rifle. I was totally impressed with both and have decided to buy one. Since both are the same price ($5k) each, $$ will not be the deciding factor.

In the past, I have been partial to the sub gun style, having owned a mid size Uzi, Tec-9 and open bolt Mac10 all of which I have since sold because I didn't like the balance without the stock. However the SP89 wasn't like that.

What are your thoughts and why??

20 years ago you could pick one of these 89's for high teens,,, far cry from 5 grand..... They are very nice guns and 9mm ammo is fun out of something with a stock, but 5 grand.... IDK?
So for me if it's the desert tac. and then you have got a kick-ass short to mid range long gun without having to go through the sniper training.... Start with the .308 platform, go shopping for a nice Leupold or go nuts for a nightforce for 1,500-2,000 bucks. Then when you are ready to go out farther,,,, jump into the .300 win. mag., if you get a silencer in 08 you can still use it with the mag and the rounds are way cheaper. Until this thing with the .338 lapua dies down it is hard to get rounds and they cost about 6 bucks a round.
Isn't it way easier to spend someone else money, why is that?

If I went with the DT, it would only be the .308 version as I really liked the compactness and have no desire to spend $5 - $6 with each pull of the trigger. I also really didn't want to go too much over the $5k mark so I am not planning on spending $1500 on optics. I was hoping to get something with 8x for much less than that. But I do agree, it is always easier to spend someone else's $$$

Thanks for the info.

jdigga - I'm cheap. That doesn't mean I don' tlike to spend money. But it means I DO want to get my money back if I ever decide to sell something. So with that said, the SP89 is a better buy. It is also something you will use more often.

If you want a long distance gun, I'd suggest something from someone more universally known, like McMillan or one of the more established sniper rifle makers. A military pedigree doesn't hurt. Please excuse me if I'm way off on the DT Bullpup. I'm ignorant on that one.

Any interest in a MG? A M11 with a Lage upper makes for a very nice shooter for about $4000. A stretch to $6k gets you a f/a uzi.

I completely agree with you on your selection of .308 cal for a rifle. Again, I'm cheap. You don't invest in ammo when you use it. You piss it away. .308 is great because you can get milsurp stuff for less than half the cost of commercial stuff. My deer rifle is chambered in .308 and I actually shoot it for fun.
